Meet Caitlyn Capulong of Canica Designs in Buckeye

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlyn Capulong.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My passion for art began when I was a little girl at the age of four. I was always drawn to art and found myself doodling and painting as a form of hobby and relaxation. Growing up, I started incorporating different mediums like markers, acrylic, watercolor paints, pastel, and crayons. I would collect random things around the house that most people would throw away. Soon, my clutter collection was used to create and design various projects of which I shared with family and friends.

During Highschool, I realized how much I enjoyed drawing and painting which led me to desire to study Graphic Design. I have always enjoyed using my computer editing videos from family vacations, dance choreographies, and other special events. I also have an Aunt, who is a Graphic designer and entrepreneur in California. Spending my summer enjoying my internship experience with BC Design Haus inspired me to pursue Graphic Design and Advertising. To me, Graphic Design is a perfect career because I get to utilize my amazing gifts and talents to create unique designs for other people.

After I graduated High School, I attended Benedictine University in Mesa for two years, studying Graphic Design. In 2019, I transferred to Grand Canyon University pursuing Graphic Design and Advertising. At GCU, my passion for Graphic Design grew and it was then that I developed an Instagram account for Canica Designs, where I post most of my designs and artwork. For fun, I also started creating tee-shirt designs for my sister and boyfriend. Next thing you know, I was getting more orders from other people who saw and loved my unique tee-shirt designs. The other zeal I have is creating a collection of paintings and prints.

Eventually, my artwork became more well-known and I was asked to sell my artwork for the very first time at an event in November of 2019. When I heard this, I was so shocked, like what! I couldn’t believe that someone would ask me to do this. As soon as I said yes, I dedicated my whole 2019 summer creating more artwork to sell. My perseverance and constantly posting my art on Instagram soon paid off. Numerous times, I was invited to showcase my artwork in various art vendor booth events and soon got to sell at the First Friday Phoenix event. I would have never thought that this would happen, I started off without a table or art set up for a booth along with no art to sell other than old paintings. But once summer 2019 ended, I had new illustrations, Art and a beautiful table that my boyfriend and his dad built me.

I am truly grateful to know that people appreciate and enjoy my artwork. I have been enjoying meeting new people as well as the exposure and overwhelmed by the positive responses and remarkable growth of Canica Designs. I feel honored and forever blessed for every part of this journey and for my families great support I cannot wait for what the future holds.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest challenge was probably finding places to print my artwork that was within my budget. It is very expensive, so researching to find the best quality but also a good price was difficult to find. I had to experiment with many online companies and there were many that I used that ended up having poor quality, which made it even harder to be able to find the right ones. Another challenge is time management, because of college I have multiple graphic design projects at once and it gets overwhelming to try and stay on top of my school work along with creating new content for Canica Designs. But other than that it has been a pretty smooth journey and it is nothing I can’t handle.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Canica Designs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
At first, I created Canica Designs as a freelance design brand for myself. It then became a company that sells artwork and freelance service as well. I sell Illustrated prints, stickers, pins, keychains, t-shirts and paintings. Overall, I am mainly known for my illustrations and skills in Graphic Design and Advertising. What sets me apart from other designers is my love for color, I like to use bold and vibrant colors and I am not afraid to use new ones. I love that colors have different meanings and can speak to a person in a way that words may not. Canica was developed in the summer of 2019, with only less than a year, I have been invited to participate in numerous events. I am very grateful for what Canica is, and I know I am barely starting and that I have so much to learn from and grow into but this journey has been a dream. Meeting many amazing people is the best part because I get to create relationships and new friendships that I would have never had if it wasn’t for Canica Designs.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My biggest plan after I graduate Grand Canyon University this semester is to get a job in the graphic design industry along with continuing to grow Canica Designs and develop unique designs and artworks. I hope to develop and continue to grow my skills. I plan to engage in more events where I can share my art and talent. It will be a wonderful experience meeting and getting inspired by other artists who share the same passion as I do.
