Today we’d like to introduce you to Bruce Dunbar.
Hi Bruce, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
We started My Sweet Ass Beverage Burros during the pandemic as a way to spread the joy donkeys (or Burros as they are known in the southwest), bring to people’s lives. Donkeys have been a huge help in my recovery and growth and I wanted to share it with others.
We bring our burros to weddings, as beer Burros, to schools and libraries as Biblioburro, giving out books and on hikes through the desert in conjunction with Air BnB Experience and a program we started called Four Legs For Fitness where we take out local neighbors on hikes 4 days a week. We also do Burro- grams where we bring a burro to your home for a visit, much like a floral or candy delivery.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our biggest struggle has been the pandemic and subsequently getting the word out about what we do. Once people have the buy-in they are usually hooked and we have made many people donkey lovers in the past 3 years. These animals have a way of calming and engaging people wherever they go.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a creative person, I enjoy coming up with new ways to bring our animals to people and share the energy they have. Bringing them to weddings as beverage Burros creates a memory guest will never forget and talk about for years to come.
Bringing them to schools, libraries, and retirement homes it is always wonderful to see the people’s and kids’ faces light up and observe the interaction between them and the animals. We let our burros be burros giving them and our clients a safe and open environment to learn from each other.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
We have had nothing but support from the local burro community and the other businesses doing similar work. Instead of being competitive or cutthroat, we are all working together to expand people’s awareness of the benefits of donkey ownership and a connection to each other as people, we are all part of One Herd.
