Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Wright.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I began photography when I was in junior high when all I had to take pictures with was my iPod Touch, and my only editing tools were free apps where I would add layers upon layers of filters to my photos. The app that had the most influence on me as a new photographer was definitely Instagram and I truly believe if it were not for the creation of Instagram, I most likely would not have become the photographer that I am today. Because of it, I started creating surreal composite images (which I still enjoy doing from time to time) and since then I’ve also dabbled in minimalism, street, sport, and architecture photography, and I now specialize in wedding and portrait photography! One of the most exciting things to happen in my photography career that I never saw coming was being able to shoot for Swimming World Magazine each Spring starting in 2016, photographing Olympic swimmers at the Pro Swim Series events in Mesa, and having one of my photos being chosen as the cover of Swimming World’s April 21st, 2018 biweekly magazine. I feel very lucky that right from the start, I’ve received encouragement and support for my photography from my friends and family and that has not changed one bit over the years.
Please tell us about your art.
I do wedding and portrait photography because after third-shooting a wedding for the first time in 2016, I truly fell in love with it. I really enjoy the photojournalistic feel to wedding photography and being able to capture every moment from an outside perspective while still being a part of it. Although posed formal portraits are just as important to capture, I especially enjoy photographing the real, candid moments that wouldn’t otherwise be seen by the bride and groom while they are busy enjoying their special day. Photographing true love gives me so much joy, so don’t be surprised if you catch me beaming behind my camera or getting teary-eyed during the vows!
I hope to really capture the emotion of the day so that anyone can feel happy when they look at my images, and my goal is for the couples themselves to feel that same emotion as they did on their wedding day.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I define success as an artist as being able to look back at your older work, even from just a few months ago, and see that you have improved since then. Along with that, success is always wanting to better your craft to be the best you can be. I’m always wanting to learn more about wedding photography and the business aspect of it for that exact reason! Persistence is a great characteristic to have because there are days when it’s easy to feel unmotivated, but you need to be able to keep doing what you need to do to grow as an artist and to grow your business. I definitely have those days but having an end goal in mind that I want to get to helps me keep going and drinking some coffee while working at my computer doesn’t hurt either….
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I post my work mainly on Instagram and more recently to my new Facebook page! It will also be available and organized on my new website, which is currently under construction, but will be available soon (keep your eyes peeled). And if you’ve made your way down to Art Intersection in Gilbert, you may have seen a handful of my personal work featured in them “Emerge” and “No Strangers” exhibitions! For support, I would absolutely love to get more feedback/constructive criticism from others whether it’s through a message, in person, or through comments on social media.
