Meet Brooke Locklin of Pics By Brookie in Queen Creek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Locklin.

Brooke, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
About five years ago, I started taking pictures on my iPod 4. I showed my parents all my best photos, and they agreed to buy me my first camera. Unboxing my beginner Nikon DSLR was the equivalent feeling of Christmas morning!

My little sister, Olivia, was my best (and only) model. I took pictures of everything around me-from flower bushes to gymnastics meets. My first paid gig was incredible, some of the gymnastics mom’s wanted printed pictures of their daughter’s performing at meets. That moment was my first thought of, “Hey, maybe I’m good enough to make something out of this..” Then I started my Instagram account, posting pictures I took of my friends. From there it’s been all uphill!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part of becoming successful was marketing myself. I’m not a very outgoing person, so it was definitely a challenge to find different clients. I also always questioned that I wasn’t the “best” in the business, but I learned it’s all about creating photos YOU are proud of.

Pics By Brookie is my small, self-employed photography business. I do mostly freelance work, people contact me to capture their most important life events. I specialize in wedding and portrait photography, but I am always up for something new!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is making sandcastles with our neighbors. When I was 6 or 7, my mom built my sister and our own playhouse in the sandbox. We spent hours out there, running wild with our imaginations! That must’ve been where all the creativity started. 😉
