Meet Brittney VanCleaf

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney VanCleaf.

Brittney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a first-time mother who was very particular about what I put in my child’s hair. So, it begins with me changing or modifying plain conditioners in order to fit what I wanted to be in his hair. I wanted something that helped his curls be more defined without making it hard or crunchy or applying gel to his hair. Soon enough, I tried it on my own hair. It worked well but was very heavy so I tweaked it. I began to put lighter higher quality oils and what I would use. And the way my hair would look, I would get a lot of compliments people would ask what I use and when I told him I making myself they’d often ask if I sold it. So, from that was born the idea of making it available to other women with curly hair because oftentimes, we have to use 17 products just to get curl definition and less frizz. Here I was only using one. So, I began to research what it took to produce my own conditioner.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely been a learning curve trying to formulate your own conditioner from scratch. But I enjoy it. I’m also self-financed so we have no debt. Which is good but at times can be restrictive if the funds aren’t available.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Koiffed Krown story. Tell us more about the business.
I make leave-in conditioner, facial oils, dread butter/scalp oil and coming soon a hair growth oil.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’d say I’ve been lucky to not run into too many obstacles when developing my formulas. A lot of times, the formulation seems to come from nowhere but works perfectly.
