Meet Brittney Dant of The Black Peony + Clothing in Gilbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Dant.

Brittney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started The Black Peony Boutique on a whim in May of 2017.

Prior to starting The Black Peony, I had just become a mom of two, accepting becoming a stay at home mom & all while trying to maintain my cosmetology career of 6.5 years.

Things were not financially working out for my family and it felt like we were headed full speed on a downhill spiral. Given our circumstances and knowing where we desired to be in the future, we knew something had to be changed.

The thought of a clothing business had truly always been a desire of mine, but I’d always let the fear of venturing out stop me. How was I going to do this all while being a SAHM? How was I going to keep my beauty career? How the heck do I start a business when I have no money? Where do I even begin? These were only a few questions id continue to ask myself.

After trying to talk myself out of the idea of having a boutique several times, I just went for it.
Things couldn’t be any worse than what they were & I had faith that something had to give, so why not?

Fast forward to now, my obsession with clothing has not changed. Picking out clothing for women & seeing them wear our clothes, with a boost of confidence will never get old.

Looking back, I never would have imagined being where I am now. The Black Peony has become way more than a form of income. It truly is my passion.

About 6-8 months ago, I put my business on hold. Prior to starting, I asked God to humble myself if this adventure gets out of hand. and well so be it. (That’s a different story for another day.)

I paused and re-evaluated my purpose for The Black Peony. It was no longer a form of income. I wanted it to be bigger than a place to buy clothing.

Fast forward to now, I have learned more about myself, and would have never experienced growth if id never steps out of my comfort zone, to begin with.

“The Black Peony” is to grow through what you go through. Good & Bad.
And know that there is beauty in whatever situation life throws at you.

We have since rebranded & are focusing more on our unique, personal designs, while still maintaining a boutique atmosphere.

The Black Peony would be nothing without our loyal supporters!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not always been smooth sailing.

When I first started, the fear of the unknown did not mesh well with my personal anxiety.
Doubts form, the questioning of being “good enough” happens.

I also didn’t know how it was going to affect my personal life, mentally & emotionally. At one point I was working numerous hours a week. Most days I wouldn’t go to sleep until 4 in the morning, then wake up 2 hours later to start it all over.

Eventually, I just hit rock bottom & was so exhausted because I never made time to prioritize myself.
(All my independent women, do ya feel me?)

But after accepting that I’m not the energizer bunny & figuring out other ways to manage things, it made everything a whole lot easier.

Another big struggle that took a while for me to figure out was how to prioritize my family but still grow & maintain my business. When to work. When to play with the kids. When to take a night out and enjoy with my spouse. When to hang out with friends & when to stay in a focus on my future. There is no special book to read that tells you all the right and wrongs ways, you just have to learn & grow from the choices you make along the way.

But all seriousness aside, the bittersweet highs definitely out way the struggles.
