Meet Brittany Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Miller.

Brittany, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Brittany Miller, I am an Arizona native and my husband Ryan Miller and I are raising three beautiful daughters in Queen Creek Arizona. We have a busy crazy happy family life filled with a whole lot of stress mixed in with memories, parenting, volleyball games, dance classes, therapies, doctor’s appointments, and our professions. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Our youngest, Brooke Elizabeth has a terminal diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy, Aicardi Syndrome and Epilepsy. She has taught us countless life lessons in the decade she has been with us and we cherish everyone, even the truly heart-breaking times. Our family is stronger, I am better because we have our Brookie the Brave. Her sisters are incredible little women who have learned empathy and compassion you cannot replicate, having a special needs sibling is life changing.

I am the host of Lift, a Podcast for the Special Needs Mother. It is a passion project of mine and I am loving it. Why did I start this podcast, social media page and support group? Well I am also a medical mama, special needs mother and over the last decade I have learned that connection with other women who get my life brings me so much joy. I need it. We need it. This road can be difficult and lonely and in this parenting journey we likely never planned on, lifting each other up is essential. I also support special needs families as a Family Support Specialist for our state’s parent information center for special needs families and serve on the Family Advisory Council for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. I also serve in many early childhood committees and capacities for our state’s early intervention program. I love it. Advocacy is a passion of mine, being informed is being empowered.

I always tell friends or parents I am working with through my profession that being a mother to a child with a disability is the “most wonderful club I never wanted to be a part of but now cannot live without.” Ain’t that the truth? I know I am not alone in the feeling of awe and honor that we were chosen Mamas to raise these incredible little heroes that teach us about life and love. We are the lucky ones, it is SO tough, but SO worth it. It is not all roses and rainbows though and I want to be real about this life and its challenges. Lift has given me a therapeutic outlet AND a way to connect with special needs mothers who get my life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road whatsoever! Having a medically involved child, teen daughters, a profession I love and becoming a foster parent, my life is busy crazy and beautiful. I thrive on being on the go however and as my father would say “if you want something done give it to a busy person.” I love having a full calendar and checking off my to do list. The podcast just naturally fits into my life as I am sharing my momming journey with fellow special needs mothers and what I have learned along the way. Life is busy, my husband and I both works, we have a child with intense medical issues and teen daughters who are active with extra curriculars and sports but we make it work and are happy.

Lift, a Podcast for the Special Needs Mother – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hello mamas! Welcome to the beginnings of a dream of mine that I finally got the guts to get started on; Lift, a Podcast for the Special Needs Mother! My heart feels like it could burst, I am a little nervous and feeling kind of crazy to jump in but hey why not? If we constantly doubt ourselves about dreams, we have, we will never go for them. I turned 40 earlier this year and decided I wanted to be the kind of woman, mother, wife and friend that went for it. And here we are:)

I am hoping as I get going on this dream of mine that we can learn together. Laugh together, even cry together. Share experiences and joys and lift each other’s spirits. My goal is to do a weekly podcast that will air every Wednesday afternoon. This may change, I may have to finagle with scheduling depending on family life, guest speakers and let’s be real, my daughter Brookie’s health, but I am committed to show up. For you, for me and for all of the other special needs mothers out there that need a lift mid-week to keep going, keep smiling. Keep persevering. I will share more about my family and I cannot wait to learn about yours as we travel this new path together. Life is hard. let’s lift each other up- Brit

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Well I love helping mothers when their child is first diagnosed. They are overwhelmed with the list of resources and programs they are supposed to apply for, they are trying to grieve their life and they were supposed to have all while taking care of a child with medical issues and special needs. I feel the most satisfaction when I get to help this mom and be here for her. Let her talk to me, grieve, and then help. I get it, this is my life and I know who this mom is. She was me almost 11 years ago. This part of my work is the most fulfilling. Helping this mom feel supported and not alone.

For the podcast, hearing the testimonials. Going on Apple Podcasts and finding Lift and seeing the growing list of subscribers, reviews and comments on how Lift has touched parents and made them feel uplifted. This is THE reason I started Lift, a Podcast for the Special Needs Mother.
