Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Fillion.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Bree. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story as a clothing reseller started way before the existence of That Girl Thrifts. I like to say reselling is in my blood because growing up, my mom used eBay to sell things around the house. As I got older, I used the platform on and off to sell my own belongings, but I didn’t go full force until a home project pushed me to experiment.
During a floor renovation, I had to empty my whole closet. Instead of putting everything back in my closet once the project was done, I listed a handful of items on a platform called Poshmark. I was shocked by how quickly I got my first sale (within hours of listing) and took my fiance’s advice to make a trip to the thrift store.
Fast forward two years, multiple trips to the thrift store, and over 600 sales later! Today, I manage my reselling business alongside my full-time job in marketing. I spend my free time thrifting, listing, selling, and most importantly, helping other part-time resellers find balance and consistency.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Reselling in itself can be a tough business, but try mixing in a full-time job, paired with a family, and wedding planning – things can get bumpy!
Early on, I struggled with simply not having enough time in a day to get everything done. There are so many components to the reselling business; not only are you sourcing your product, you are also cleaning it, photographing it, listing it, organizing it, and shipping it – that’s a lot of steps just for ONE item. I felt like I was constantly battling the clock, working in the evenings and from sunup to sundown on the weekends.
I realized I was on the road to burn out city, so I quickly put myself on a routine to maximize my efficiency. I took apart my process and started batching duties. Now, I reserve Saturday mornings for sourcing, Sunday mornings for cleaning, photographing, and organizing, and weeknights to listing. Of course, I’m still faced with the ever-daunting inconsistent sales from time to time, but now I have a routine that’s set me and my business up for success.
Please tell us about That Girl Thrifts.
That Girl Thrifts is mostly a women’s clothing resale business. In less than a few words, I source inventory and sell it on platforms like eBay and Poshmark. While doing this, I also share my journey through my Instagram page @thatgirlthrifts. I initially started the account as a way to share my thrift finds, however, I quickly learned that it also provided me a way to connect with other resellers. I started to take an interest in the roadblocks other part-time resellers, like myself faced. I do my best to share best practices and develop content to help other sellers achieve balance and success through time management and consistency.
I’m proud of the reach my brand has achieved in the short time it’s been live. Not only has my social media channel helped me impact the lives of others, it’s also brought new customers into the That Girl Thrift’s family.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My mom passed away when I was only 13 years old, so my favorite memories all have her in them. One of my favorite times to think back on and the reason I do what I do is a time when my mom listed a Tiffany and Co necklace on eBay. At the time, Tiffany and Co was a HOT commodity, along with auctions on eBay. This was also before the era of cell phones, so we relied on our computer to tell us how well her listing was doing. We would come home after dinner and run to the computer to check how many bids she had on the item. We had so much joy watching the price point go up as she had more and more bids come in.
