Meet Brandon Edelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Edelson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have been drawing since before I can remember, it’s my greatest skill and has developed and matured with me as I have aged. I have gone through numerous changes and that has been reflected through my work like a timeline. My interest in art started when I was a toddler drawing animals I saw on PBS and National Geographic T.V shows along with a great deal of books. I liked the way they moved, seeing their dramatic lives in action, learning about their various muscles and organs to understand their biology, all of it is very interesting. What pushed me to improve my skills was when I was introduced to conceptual movie/video-game artwork, that was when I started to tell my own story through art as well, I wanted to be a concept artist, I increased my visual library so I could broaden what I could draw just from memory, this moved me into surrealism. Then in 2015 my direction began to change again, going towards more of an academic approach with drawing and now painting, to capture realism. I have been out of high school for over a year and look forward to pursuing an education at academic art schools to finely tune my skills to become a more disciplined artist and man.

Please tell us about your art.
My studies include realism and surrealism, with my preferred mediums: graphite, charcoal and oil paint. I will branch out with water color and ink occasionally however, I like to restrict my use of different media. I think lately I’ve been formulating a message I’m not too sure about how to get it across, I want it to feel timeless, it needs to be natural something most can find in the core of their being. Most of my feelings regarding my work are about self-reflection, loneliness, and a need for something more. I think it should be simple and memorable yet you can get very deep, intense and personal about it if the conversation begs for that which it should, it always should. The duration of our lives is short so there’s no reason not to be serious about it.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The greatest threat to artists of all time is fear of failure, something that is inevitable should not be feared. One of the growing issues in today’s world is the highly-saturated market for art work and artists there’s not very much room to breathe, you really need to be strong willed and dedicated to the craft to get a hold on in this kind of career.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
