Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Dorame.
Hi Brandon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
In March 2022, I started a handyman business called Sponte Handyman Service, LLC. The name pays homage to the motto of the 75th Ranger Regiment, “Sua Sponte”; I served in the United States Army from 2015-2020, with most of my time assigned to Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment as a Forward Observer. My time in the Army brought me to where I am now.
I grew up in Anthem, Arizona, and graduated from Boulder Creek High School in 2014. The following year I enlisted in the Army with the determination to join Special Operations and be a part of something bigger than myself. I learned the big life lessons of doing hard work, arriving on time or having to do extra PT (I hate running), being tested to limits I surpassed, and serving. But most importantly, doing what I said I would do; at 19 years old, I set a high goal for myself of being in Special Operations and obtained that. Looking back on my time in the military, I have extreme pride in what I did and the man I became due to many successes and failures.
When I returned home, I reflected on my previous five years to determine what I wanted the next five years to look like. I asked myself, “would I be happy doing this as a profession, or am I settling?”. I was nervous about failing, but I was also nervous about failing in the military, but I didn’t. Time after time, I came to the answer of “settling” with a follow-up of “but I think I want to start my own business.” After nearly two years of an internal debate and countless “what-if” discussions with my wife, we decided to embark on this journey. I chose to specialize as a handyman because I have the skills and knowledge of the services offered and because I recognized the need for someone like me in the industry: someone who does what they say they are going to, someone who shows up to the job, someone who has pride in their work, and someone satisfied when serving others.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle was Day One of starting the business as the owner and sole employee. Everything was new, from registering as an LLC, creating a brand, marketing myself, and building a client base. Now that I have been going for almost six months, I use every day as an opportunity to learn, grow, and hone my skills as a business owner and handyman. The current obstacle I face is competition, similar to all other businesses. Within my industry, it is common to find other handypersons doing it for cheaper, without the proper skills, licensing, insurance, materials, etc., and as a result, and understandably so, clients typically go for the cheaper option. I strive to deliver my clients high-quality work at a fair price from a licensed professional.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a handyman and licensed contractor. I specialize in those “Honey-Do Lists” that have gotten out of hand! From installing new hardware on a door, fixing drywall patches, weather-stripping, mounting TVs, and furniture assembly, to full home interior and exterior painting, I can cross it all off the list!
I believe what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail and that I treat all projects as my ones; this is my business, and I am directly responsible for the work done and how the client feels at completion. I don’t cut corners in my work; for example, if a client asks for a door to be repainted, I don’t just paint the door. I will remove hardware, sand the door, fully degrease all surfaces, tape off necessary areas, prime, and repaint. Extra steps require extra work, but the ratio of time to the quality of the outcome is worth it. Another asset I like to offer to all my clients is the option to have a 21-point inspection completed when I visit their homes. This includes ensuring that they have fire extinguishers, checking smoke alarms, and reviewing locks and other security access points. A big one in Arizona is testing the weather stripping of doors and windows – just items that can be easily overlooked in households but can make a huge difference. I think, “if this was my mom’s house, what would I want to ensure is done?”
Had we love to hear about any fond memories you have from growing up?
I was fortunate to be raised in a family that focused on the importance of spending time together. My favorite memories are the camping, fishing, and hunting trips that I went on with my dad, brother, uncles, and cousins. In those times, I learned independence, physical work, life skills like building a fire and fishing for your next meal, and how beautiful the Arizona desert is. Today, going camping, fishing, and hunting with my wife and our two dogs have become my favorite memories as an adult.
