Meet Brandon Day of Odyssey Health in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Day.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was a competitive athlete up through college and was fortunate enough to play for a wildly successful college football team in Montana. Winning two of the three National Championships that our teams were a part of was a blessing and experience I will always treasure. I was even honored with a picture taken of me after our 2007 win gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine in December of ’07.

After a short detour into producing and acting in independent films after my undergrad, I found my way back to the gym when I moved from Los Angeles to Phoenix. What started as a want to fix my broken body and get back into shape, turned into helping my younger brother with his own health and fitness, and it blossomed from there. I took a job as a personal trainer and fell in love with helping people who like me, experienced pain on a regular basis.

In 2015, I decided to pursue the rehabilitation and corrective exercise avenue even further, and in 2017 I graduated from A.T. Still University of Health Sciences with a Master’s degree in Kinesiology.

From there I was given the extraordinary opportunity to develop and run a Wellness Program for the Valley’s premiere Pain Therapy company, Back In Action of Arizona. Fast forward to January of 2018, and I decided that it was time to move out of the clinic, and begin the journey to helping as many people as I could through fitness, nutrition and lifestyle optimization, and thus, Odyssey Health was born.

Has it been a smooth road?
The journey has just begun for Odyssey Health, but my personal journey is years in the making. college football, extreme sports, and a general disregard for my own health and wellness in my younger years put me in an interesting position to be able to help my clients from an empathetic point of view. I’ve seen my fair share of injuries, illness, and mental health struggles.

Like many people that get in their own way, I had accepted the way my life was and I bought into my own suffering. I had “bad knees”, constant neck and low back pain, I was overweight, I suffered from sleep apnea, crippling depression and anxiety, and a general problem with body image and low self-esteem that I self-medicated with drugs and alcohol.

But I’m living proof that you don’t have to let life run you. You can take control of your health and fitness, and no matter how far down you fall, you can, and must, get back up and live your life on your terms.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Odyssey Health – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Odyssey Health’s mission is to give you the tools to live the life you truly desire, and to crush your fitness and performance goals. Using science-based training methods, with whole-foods-based nutrition therapies, you can take your life back and gain the confidence to be the best version of yourself.

I specialize in orthopedic rehabilitation and corrective exercise, but I mesh my post-graduate education in these areas with the 15+ years of experience in strength and conditioning programs for athletics. I believe that having a solid foundation of movement literacy will set a client up for success long after they are done with my programs.

What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
There’s a quote from The Rabbi in the 2006 movie Lucky Number Slevin that I think about that relates to luck.

“The unlucky are nothing more than a frame of reference for the lucky. You are unlucky, so I may know that I am not. Unfortunately the lucky never realize they are lucky until it’s too late. Take yourself for instance; yesterday you were better off than you are today but it took today for you to realize it. But today has arrived and it’s too late. You see? People are never happy with what they have. They want what they had, or what someone else has.”

I believe we make our own luck. I used to say that I was just lucky that I ended up on the cover of Sports Illustrated, but in reality, there were years of preparation that led to that moment.
