Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Powell.
Brandi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault. I started to heal from the wounds left behind from that abuse in 2011. Through small support groups and therapy, I began to find my worth and the value that I have as a human being.
Since then, I’ve been passionate about helping other survivors on their journey to healing. I went to school to be certified as a life coach and also received extensive training in working with abuse survivors.
In 2017, I knew the next step was to form my own organization, Village of the Valley. VOTV offers one-on-one transformational life coaching sessions, enrichment workshops and small support groups to ANY woman who wants it. We spend up to a year with a client working on their personal empowerment. AND…we offer it at zero cost to them. There is no other organization offering what we offer in Phoenix.
We officially became a 501(c)(3) in 2019. We operate off of donations from people in the community who understand that when a woman experiences change, she takes what she learns and offers it to others. That “offering” of good and healthy self-worth, value and love changes her family, friends and ultimately her community. At VOTV we say, “Empower A Woman. Change A Community”, because that’s precisely what happens.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course not! But that’s where the growth happens!
Funding is always hard to find and a continual work in process.
The other hard part has been practicing patience and not jumping ahead too fast. Which is my tendency! So, I have been slowing down, giving room and space for things to unfold a bit. Which seems to be the better path.
Please tell us about Village of the Valley.
Village of the Valley is a Collaborative of Transformational Life Coaches offering our services for free to any woman who wants it. We take great pride in our work. The $0 price tag is a reflection of our determination to help as many women as possible. It absolutely does not reflect the value of what we are offering them.
We spend 4-6 months with a client working on her top 3 goals. These goals can be in various arenas – relational, emotional, self-care, or spiritual in nature. Our sessions are 45-60 minutes and occur once per week.
We also offer enriching workshops that cater to the top issues our clients are facing. From building a true friendship to choosing peace over chaos, we have a range of topics to focus on in our workshops.
Our weekly small support groups are also topical in nature. They offer an intimate and safe group setting to share openly. Thus far in 2019, we have worked through spiritual deconstruction and codependency.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
I would have remembered not to put all of my eggs in one basket. When you do that, you build an expectation and inevitably things don’t work out the way you may have narrowly envisioned them.
