Today we’d like to introduce you to Bradley Pugh.
Hi Bradley, We are so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born and raised in Flagstaff, AZ, I am interested in outdoor activities. I started skiing and turned into snowboarding, camping, hiking, mountain biking, and skateboarding. The cool place to buy equipment was a local skate/snow shop called AZP, owned by Brian Harper. Brian was a skateboard ramp builder, and my friends, as their Gromit kids hanging around, were put to work quickly cutting 2x4s and building half pipes and bowels with plywood and Masonite. During high school, I became passionate about welding when my Dad, Ed Dan French, welded his horse corals and mare hotel; I was mesmerized by how he could melt and join metal together. I soon worked for him for a bit. Brian was also a Professional snowboarder in the 80s-90s and had connections with Tim Windell, who owned Windell’s Snowboard camp on Mt Hood, Oregon. I spent a few summers as a Digger, maintaining the glacier jumps and half pipe for the campers to train in the summer. This was about 1998-2001. I remember skateboarding with Shawn White back at camp in the massive bowl we built; he was younger than I was and blew my mind with how talented he was very coordinated. One summer, a Gentleman heading the professional snowboard team in Park City, Utah, noticed we were building these metal rails and sliding on them with our snowboards. He asked if I would build their rails at their snowboard park. In 2001, I started a business and built their park. During this time and the next year, I had a few opportunities to weld the metal coping and rails for the concrete skateparks in Paradise Valley and Flagstaff, AZ. At about 20, I was still deciding what career to choose.
My parents asked if I would be interested in a diving school in Santa Barbara where I could learn underwater welding and get a good-paying job. I said so and spent a couple of years there to learn it wasn’t quite my cup of tea, but I got my associate’s degree. I returned to Northern AZ University and completed the Construction Management bachelors. I hired on with a company, Hensel Phelps. Here, I worked from 2008 to 2019 on several large commercial projects in AZ and California, City North, Sky Harbor Sky Train, Maricopa Land Port of Entry Nogales, AZ, SFO Air Traffic Control Tower San Francisco, CA, San Ysidro Land Port of Entry San Diego CA, Senior Estimator. At Hensel Phelps, I expanded my knowledge of the field and office operations of the construction business. After 11 years there, I was itching for something else again, so I decided to get my dual residential and commercial contractors license in AZ. I also transitioned companies here in Phoenix to DPR construction, where I again worked on a handful of projects as a Superintendent, APS, Florence Hospital, U of A Biomedical Research Building, Mayo Clinic West Expansion, San Carlos Hotel, ASU Health Futures building.
While at DPR, I met a family friend, Gustavo, who knows concrete and construction more as a Forman/Laborer. He came over and installed some pavers at my place, and from then on, I started picking up work from my neighbors. I was taking some personal training at Mountainside, and I mentioned that I do side jobs and would like to start my own company as a custom home builder one day. It just so happened that one of his other clients was ready to remodel their new house. I was soon working with the Marchica, where we did a complete interior and exterior remodel with a brand new pool, and it was a success, so I decided to take a leap of faith and give it a go. We are remodeling pools and backyards, homes, additions, Remodels, new builds, and small commercial. Most of our work is referral-based. I have social media where I post videos and pictures on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. We are a small company, but we can grow. I love to work with my hands, manage the budgets, and be involved with each job, so I am to a point where I have to say no to an expedited request to work and put new clients on a waiting list so I can give their jobs the attention it deserves. “Bringing Joy to your space, Together we will Succeed.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I credit Hensel Phelps and my 11 years there as my greatest asset to being a builder. The knowledge that they’re working in the field and the office educated me and gave me confidence that I can manage construction jobs. There, I could also save Extra finances to cushion the leap. I also have a rental property that provides an additional cushion as I transition to being self-employed—my few years at DPR opened my eyes to better time management. Through coaches and mentors, I have soaked in much information, one of my favorite being Jason Schroeder at Elevate Construction. He has a fantastic podcast for anyone interested in construction. In many of the complex trials, our mental stability and endurance both mentally and physically, you need to eat healthy, get enough sleep, keep your body in shape, or put yourself through more challenges than you should.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Brad Pugh, founder of Tenor Construction LLC. I’m a licensed General Contractor, both residential and commercial. An ideal client for me is someone ready to build that new home or commercial space, addition, or remodel. Interior or exterior, we have you covered. “Creating Joy in your space, together we will succeed.”
I just acquired a franchise, installing solar thermal water heaters and solar thermal swimming pool heating all four seasons and homeowners can’t qualify for the 30% tax credit and a up to $2000 Southwest gas credit if they have gas at their house.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Jason Schroeder, Tony Robbins, my wife, and my mom
