Today we’d like to introduce you to Boss Lady Stacey Grondahl.
Boss Lady Stacey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In a career nutshell… I started out as a massage therapist, back in Bakersfield, California – where I grew up when I was 18. Transitioned into esthetics shortly thereafter. Got a job working at a fancy resort in Menlo Park, California – where myself and 3 other full-time employees (out of 7) got injured and ended up on disability. Awesome right?!? All at the age of 24. Safe to say, at one point, I never thought I would be able to use my left hand properly ever again. It took about 2 years, but I managed to regain about 80% use of my left hand, while still suffering a degenerative muscle condition called dequervains tendinosis, which I was labeled permanently disabled by the age of 25. I then decided (in about 15 seconds) to move to Scottsdale, Arizona to pursue a laser and medical aesthetics career. Although I’ve received much training over the years, my current situation is all because of a “spritz” in the face.
When I was attending laser school, I was sprayed with Rhonda Allison Cucumber Spritz, which smells like absolute freaking heaven by the way. I had to know what it was immediately and thus decided shortly thereafter to apply to the company itself. I was hired by the local rep, Louisa Alten, and started teaching, using, and loving the men’s line created by the same company. RAW (then RAForMen), but now RED Method by Rhonda Allison, was what ended up taking over my life. I was insanely good at getting men to pay attention to every single thing I told them to do, use, etc. I had no idea at the time, but this would become my niche. My badassery, so to speak. That was the beginning of the journey to WE DO MEN.
Let’s not leave out the facts that I was also supposed to be a boy. She wished for a male but instead got another girl (and not a Christopher). I still believe my mom infused a whole lot of male aspects into me, in the hopes that I would have come out with an actual penis. I’m pretty damn close, is how I like to tease her. I’m more masculine than a lot of the folks I come across, and I have balls for days. Brass balls that is. It’s how I’m able to work with, handle, and deal with all the crazy sh*t I deal with on a daily basis. I wouldn’t trade it for anything though. I love it all. I opened my spa at the age of 26, now 32, coming up on 6 years of manhandling madness. It’s ridiculous, but it’s a lot of fun.
Has it been a smooth road?
Never a smooth road. My spa wasn’t always called WE DO MEN but started out as SIMPLICITY – SIMPLE SKINCARE ( and anything but a simple name ). The tagline remained WE DO MEN, but I always knew we would transition it in the future. That’s a branding nightmare for sure, but it set the path to where the spa is now, and how I run it. I dubbed myself the BOSS LADY, because to work with men, I had to become a boss, while still being a lady(-ish). I do my best.
Business wise. My favorite quote is “Being a business owner is like staring into the abyss, while eating glass.”
Also, “The customer can have any color he wants, as long as it’s black” – Henry Ford. The whole concept of the customer is NOT always right, but I know what’s right for my customer, is the way I operate. It’s a tough one. I’m old school, not tech savvy, and choose to spend time on the phone, chatting with my clients/potential clients. I know technology is seemingly easier, but for me, it’s exhausting, and it takes away from my customer experience. I’m 100% in your face, give it to you straight, you need to know the facts, etc. kinda gal. It’s very different from a lot of what you’ll experience nowadays. I don’t treat my clients like dollar signs, but like human beings, who require human interaction in order to survive. That’s the human connection. That’s whats up.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Everyone calls me BOSS LADY STACE or THE MANHANDLER. Whichever one you enjoy the most, is the one you use. They don’t call me BOSS LADY for nothing though! I’m straight up, one no b.s. lady. I give the most brutal tough love, make men sweat, laugh, joke, be authentically themselves experience I possibly can. I’m also all about the education. Men don’t know, what men don’t know. I want them to feel amazing, from the time they walk in, to the time they leave. It’s all about their best interest, and I leave nothing unsaid. It’s my thing.
A lot of my boys describe me this way. “Be prepared! Be aware! She’s an interesting one.”
I specialize in what I call THE ART OF MANHANDLING. To ManHandle, is to handle roughly, and that’s how you do MEN. No fluff. No girly stuff. All rugged. I throw down massage-based facials. Old school tactics, human tough, badass ingredients, massaged into the skin so strategically (with my Hungarian-American training background) that your skin shows the MAN GLOW. Who knew that no technology, could be just as effective. Me. In massage, you are aware of energetics. Non-verbal cues that the body gives to you. I tap into that, for the face. Your face tells me, what it needs, for how long, and where to go. I follow that plan, and I just let it happen. The results are my clients. They keep comin’ back for more.
Not to mention my retail products. I’m all about skincare and badassery for the modern man. The top 20% (because perfection is overrated) of products I deem worthy and safe on the market. BOSS LADY APPROVED only, which means I’ve tested it for 1 – 12 months for effectiveness and safety. Best of the best. Unbiased opinion. That’s me. I want my guys to have access to the best, and the education in general. I drill it into them how it’s not a luxury. Suck it up. Use the products. Watch your quality of self-improvement, while you actually enjoy grooming in the process.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. I think it’s a huge culture shock. I feel like you can do ANYTHING out here. Any crazy, insane concept. Food. Style. You name it. It’s all embraced out here. It’s culture to me. Versatility. This is where everyone comes to chill, and enjoy the sunshine (which is the truest happy vitamin there is, come on)! I had no plans to do what I do now, but in the limelight of it all, it was the perfect place to launch this concept. I’m very accepted out here. I enjoy all the different styles of men I get to work with on a daily basis. The fashion, and the looks I get to work with. What I do is beyond skin deep. I help men to become better versions of themselves, and I feel like this location is the place to do it. It’s the first place that has ever felt like home to me, for sure. I’m not sure if I ever plan to take my concept out of state, to be perfectly honest.
