Today we’d like to introduce you to Bob “Coffee” Coffman.
Bob, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After 27 years in the telecommunications industry I was tiring of the day to day responsibilities and was looking for something different to focus my skill set on. Since I had received a Business Degree (BBA) with 27 years’ experience in business sales, marketing & management along with a strong background and appreciation or golf , including being on the golf team while in school, I starting looking for an opportunity to use both my business acumen and my love for golf. Eventually I came across the Caddy for the Hole model. Initially I became an Independent Contractor to the then owner. Shortly after that I took the model to Southern California and then Northern Michigan with great deal of success. Simultaneously I bought out the previous owner of the model here in Phoenix. Eventually I sold the Michigan operations to one of my Independent Contractors. As the years went by I decided that I just wanted to focus on the Phoenix/Tucson marketplace as I was getting closer to “retirement”. Today, 16 years later, I am happy to say I achieved that goal while others are now able to take the model in other parts of the country.
Has it been a smooth road?
Leaving a salaried position as Vice President of a local telecommunications division was both scary and exciting. The business had a good start and year after year we had improved growth, however, when the economy went into the tank our business, like most, suffered. We made some adjustments that allowed us to weather the storm and survive while, unfortunately, so many companies did not.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Coffman Enterprises story. Tell us more about the business.
Our business has 2 primary clients: Charity Golf Events and Golf Courses. For Charity Golf Events we provide a list of FREE services that promotes the event, provides unique contests for events and generates additional funds for the event. In addition, we also provide another list of services (.i.e. Sponsor signs, Hole in One Insurance, Tee prizes, Awards, Million Dollar shots, Logo clothing and so forth) that are available to the organizers for a nominal cost. In providing these 2 different services we become, as Arizona Fairways Magazine stated a few year back “a single point of contact” for charity events. Having said that, there is NO requirement for the organizers to utilize and of our “pay for” services. We will provide ALL our FREE services whether the organizers choose any of our other services or not!
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
There are several moments of pride.
1) We developed a strategy to overcome the serious revenue loss we experienced when the economy took a nose dive.
2) We have generated nearly $500,000.00 of additional revenue to various charitable causes. 3) We have helped generate over a million dollars for our golf course partners and last, but not least, we have generated nearly 3/4 of a million dollars for our Independent Contractors most of which would have been without a job or in a less paying job without this position.
