Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Soroka.
Bill, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a multi-potentialite serial entrepreneur. That wasn’t always a badge of honor for me (and I am not sure that it is now, either). It has sure made life interesting, for me at least. But don’t ask my exes. I have a gift, or a knack…or a curse, for seeing opportunity just about everywhere I look. For me, that means just about every hobby or interest I have becomes a business venture. I just can’t help it. I am compelled to start businesses. It’s a calling, I suppose. And, it’s a call I’ve answered…29 times and counting. 26 of those times, I have flopped right on my face. Sometimes, maybe after a wee bit of success, but more often than not, these were just plain ‘ol epic fails.
After the 26th flop, I had to be at rock bottom-unable to pay any of my bills, in debt to friends and family after my biggests project on record totally folded, cheated on and heart-broken, and on my way to getting evicted from my apartment. There’s no way this was getting any worse (I hoped). I had three options- write a country-western song about my woes, go back to a call-center job (worst nightmare), or figure out why my businesses kept failing and then break the cycle.
I chose to break the cycle. And to do that, I took a results inventory of my life. I looked at all the things I had (a nice, shortlist at the time) and I compared to the things I wanted. I included the material or tangible things I wanted, but I also included skill sets and states of mind too. These were things like fantastical confidence and peace of mind, etc.
Why didn’t I have the results I desired? My mentor always said, “Results, while often harsh, are always fair.” Ouch. Have you ever looked 100% objectively at a problem and realized that YOU were the root cause? It doesn’t feel good, so I totally understand why so few people do it. But here I was, fully aware that I was the common denominator in 26 failed businesses, and the self-confidence to match. No wonder I was cheated on. And, no wonder I was cheated on, knew what was happening but pushed it down and ignored it, and chose to stay anyway. Ouch.
After a vodka-filled pity party, I still wanted to find out the “why” part. I could get that I was doing something to sabotage, but what was it, specifically? That’s where I started to get a clear picture about what activities I had avoided my whole life- habits and routine.
I had avoided habits and routines for most of my life because I thought they were for boring people that lived life so rigid they miss out on all the fun. It turns out, the opposite is true. Healthy habits and routines help people live a very full, joyful, and productive life.
I spent that Thanksgiving weekend sliding down the rabbit hole of human behavior and habit development. Over the span of four days, I was introduced to the likes of BJ Fogg and his Tiny Habits project. I started the Miracle Morning, thanks to Hal Elrod. That was the first time I had ever heard of Brendon Burchard and his personal development empire.
That weekend changed my life.
Over the course of the next 180 days, just six months, I went from destitute, to thriving, in the last remaining business venture I had to my name- a mobile notary and loan signing agent. Using what I had learned about building a daily success routine, and taking all of the experiences from 26 business failures, I crafted a system that propelled me and my business to levels I had only dreamt of.
Since that time, I have started the Notary Coach brand, teaching notaries in all 50 states how to build a business that grants them flexibility in their schedule, unlimited earning potential, and doing so in a legitimate business they can be proud of. Notaries serve a critical role in mortgage fraud and identity theft prevention!
In November 2019, I released the book, Sign & Thrive: How to Make Six Figures as a Mobile Notary and Loan Signing Agent, and it has quickly become an Amazon Best Selling Book.
All of this because of a shift in mindset.
Habits and routines are everything.
Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth road? Hell no.
As an optimistic serial entrepreneur, there were many times I was devastated that enthusiasm over a project wouldn’t count as currency to pay the bills. Landlords don’t accept payment in hope. And, everything takes longer than you think it should. And it always costs more than you budget for.
The biggest lessons came with people, namely business partners. I made some poor decisions there too. I chose bad partners, and I was a bad partner in some. Some of my takeaways would be: (1) Trust those little red flags that come up (2) Get it in writing no matter what (3) Your enthusiasm is NOT enough to carry you through. You need a partner that will be a partner.
And then, on top of everything else that goes on with a business, life just keeps wanting to happen too. People die. People are born. People get sick. You fall in love. Your heart gets broken. You forget to take the trash out. Life keeps on going, and you have to make it all work, which is really hard sometimes. Listen or read some Brene Brown and give yourself a break.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Notary Coach story. Tell us more about the business.
Notary Coach provides the tools necessary to build and grow a mobile notary and loan signing business. We are known as one of the most detailed and comprehensive training programs that attract professionals that love to be of service while earning a considerable income.
I am most proud of the community of members we have built. We have a reputation of respect & kindness, and I can’t think of a better foundation for those in a relationship-based business. So proud of our students!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think we have some very exciting changes occurring over the next several years. First, we can’t ignore Remote Online Notarization. This added tool will give modern notaries another revenue stream. Add this resource to the already necessary role of Notary Public, and an entrepreneur can really build a service-based business that can be scaled to any size.
I think the industry will demand highly professional, skilled, and technologically astute notaries that provide next level services in the convenience economy.
