Meet Bethanie Mattek-Sands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Bethanie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It’s certainly not a brief story becoming a professional tennis player. I started tennis at the age of five and turned professional at age 14. The upcoming 2020 season will be my 21st year of professional tennis. That sounds like I am quite old, but I will be 35 in March. It has truly been an amazing run throughout my career and all I can say to that is, I’m not done yet!

Bethanie Mattek-Sands has been known as many things. She is a 9 x Grand Slam Champion, owns 29 WTA titles, been world # 1, 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist, ESPN Analyst and is “America’s Tennis Rockstar”. Beyond those labels though, she is much much more. Bethanie is a fearless woman with trendsetting taste and a dedicated fan-base. She is a fighter who comes back stronger from setbacks, a woman setting the new standard of strength and taking life in stride for all others. From living her best life through fashion to fitness to travel and tennis, Bethanie shares her world in a very raw authentic way which has allowed her to grow a following far beyond the lines of the tennis court throughout her career.

Bethanie rises and ignites hope within those who follow her journey. It isn’t a blind endorsement or recommendation she is looking to share with the world, but rather courage, determination and love that betters the lives of those around her. At the end of the day, it is this genuine spirit that makes her a CHAMPION both on and off the court.

Bethanie resides in Phoenix, AZ with her Boerboel mastiff named Ruger and her husband of 11yrs, Justin Sands. When she is not on the competition court, Bethanie serves as a board member for the WTA Player Council, works as a tv analyst for ESPN, is enrolled in the Harvard Business School Cross Over Program, and has current collaborations with several amazing brands: Primally Pure Skincare, BMS + Lucky in Love, Kimo Sabe Mezcal, Babolat and Tennis Warehouse.

Has it been a smooth road?
HAA… Not so smooth is an understatement! I have encountered Mt. Everest a few times throughout my career with what some experts considered career ending injuries. I usually laughed them off and figured out a way to come back stronger from my setback. I am in the process of that right now actually and have my sights set on several more grand slam titles and the next Olympics, Tokyo 2020.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am most proud of how I can impact and empower individuals to help them discover their greatness. I get to play professional athletics every day and compete on a world stage in front of tens of thousands of people every week and millions more around the world. If I can inspire others to find that greatness from within them that is already there, then all of my ups and downs throughout my own journey have been worth every minute.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Phoenix, AZ is MY HOME and I wouldn’t live anywhere else… State 48 FOREVER! I’ve been around the world several times over and visited some of the most incredible cities and countries across the globe, but there is no place that I would rather live than right here in Phoenix. We have anything and everything that anyone could ever want. Sure it heats up a bit in the summer and you can fry eggs on the pavement, but we have 9 months of amazing weather and beautiful landscapes all across the state.
