Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Drogin.
Hi Benjamin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story starts at 5 years old when I started taking drum lessons. I was always into music thereafter and was in the music program for all of my education up until college. In college I started a band, not knowing what my true potential was with music. I also was starting to produce a lot of music and just having fun with it. I didn’t have a band anymore, so I had to create all the sounds in my head and with a daw on my computer I could do just that. I started getting more and more into edm, and I founded a fraternity called Sigma Nu at University of Arizona my freshman year in addition to being in the honors college. I had been producing for a while when suddenly covid hit and we all went home for spring break for what we thought would be a week and ended up being 5 months. Within those 5 months, I picked up DJing in addition to producing pretty much all day every day. back home in the Bay Area. When I came back to school, I started DJing for my frat parties, which led to me having the confidence in my abilities to go to the clubs on University Ave and put myself out there. I got to talk with the owner of Gentle Ben’s who gave me a shot especially after he learned I had started DJing for the University of Arizona Wildcats as the football team DJ. At the start of my first residency, barely anyone came to my sets. I learned very quickly that to rely on your close friends to show up to the club every time you performed, especially then when I got the opening time slot, you’d get disappointed. After putting in my time playing there and giving 150% energy every set no matter what, more doors began to open. I did free shows at this club called The Rock which led to connections with some event companies in Tucson like In Rave. I started getting booked at more places and a big lesson I would tell peopleb that asked me how I got these gigs is by making the opportunities happen yourself and taking initiative. These gigs don’t just fall into your lap right away, it takes persistence, determination, proficiency, and a lot of confidence in yourself.
I was having at least five shows a week, at a bunch of different places, for the last year in Tucson. I’ve played support for some awesome artists like Loud Luxury and Ship Wrek and a whole lot more. I’ve got some cool stories about meeting those guys. But yeah, now I’ve been booked for three Relentless Beats shows, played multiple festivals including Decadence, Dusk, and Full Moon PHX Festival. I just moved from Tucson to Scottsdale in hopes to pursue my music career here in the land of opportunity!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been the most smooth road. When I started, everyone doubted me. No one believed in my talent and abilities other than my parents and close friends. And that’s not anyone’s fault, they just did not know me yet or had given me a chance. It took a long time to prove myself and start getting better shows. I’ve had to learn a lot of valuable lessons along and not the easy way. One story of that would be when I got booked by a fraternity at University of Wisconsin to come out and do a show. I told them I could bring my RX3, a nice deck, but at the time I didn’t think to have a case. And by the time I had to leave for the trip, I had gotten so bogged down with gigs that I forgot to get a case, and figured I would just have to make do and put the rx3 in a suitcase with sweatshirts and towels. I got to the Tucson Airport and sadly learned they don’t have any fragile stickers, and figured I would hope for the best. I fly to Madison and get to baggage claim only to find out that my two thousand plus decks had a crack in the power centerline of the motherboard. It died. The fraternity was relying on me and it broke, nothing I could do and trust me we tried everything. Ultimately, I did just as great a set on one of the frat bro’s FLX 4 and got to use all my same music and it was perfect. But now with my Opus Quad I invested a lot of money in a good case to secure transport. That’s just one of the many things I’ve learned.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a producer and DJ that specializes in making feel good dance music and taking you on the sonic journey of a lifetime. I’m known for my energy, personality, talent, and how much I grind. I’m known for making music that makes you feel good but also throwing down harder than you could ever imagine. I’m most proud of my Rumble remix with Satos that got signed to EDM Family and has garnered 85,000 streams and 1,600 plus downloads and the approval from DJs from Mars collective. I am most proud of hitting 50k monthly listeners recently and almost 100k streams on my song Feel Free. I am most proud of getting to DJ at Decadence alongside some amazing artists and being able to make a living mainly from DJing with the football team. What sets me apart is my energy, my passion, my fashion, my love for what I do, my love for human beings and the world, and my hunger to excel and make a positive difference through my music.
What matters most to you?
This question took me a couple days of reflection to answer honestly. At first, I thought music and family, But after much more thought an conversations, I figured out that what matters most to me is simply making as many people on this Earth feel as good as possible. The way I can best do that is through my music. And why is because the most important part of life is living, simply being alive and appreciating being alive for the short and only time we have it. And to make you feel good instead of bad is my most clear mission.
