Meet Benjamin Conner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Conner.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Raised by a single mother in the drug and gang infested south Phoenix. Incarcerated at 16, released at 21, blah, blah, blah…That’s pretty typical. What’s unique is that having been subjected to the darkest parts of our culture I not only survived but I’ve managed to turn my life completely around into something beautiful. I’m not dead, nor am I on drugs. I’ve never been back to prison since my release, 14 years ago. I am an advocate and a living example of positive progression. Locally successful as an artist and a pillar in my community. I work full time in the banking industry. I have a beautiful 6yr old daughter. Was never expected to live past my late teens- I’m thriving at 34…..That, to say the least, is what’s “unique” about me.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a rap artist. I draw from the most vulnerable parts of my self and the most honest elements of my community. My message is freedom, enlightenment, awareness and most of all, victory. The fact that you can be victorious in all that you set your mind to, regardless of race, sex, physical disabilities, or social disadvantages is the main take away. You should know that I am passionate and sensitive about my craft. It embodies all of who and what I am. I am a man of principle, and I will not be compromised by ignorance, preconceived notions, or any forms of negative energy. My art is my heart, and my heart is my art.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I believe the biggest challenge facing artists today are small minds. In a time where the universe is literally at your fingertips, small minds can destroy almost instantly what took years to build. Small minds- definitely a cancer to today’s artist.
