Meet Ashley Flug

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Flug.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I fell in love with photography when I was just 12 years old. My family would buy me disposable cameras and I would go around taking pictures of everything. I finally got my first point and shoot camera and it was a whole new world for me, so I thought. After I graduated high school I went to a community college to learn everything I could about photography and that is where I first picked up a professional camera and I have barely set it down since. Since college I have done countless workshops and have worked with a lot of amazing photographers who have helped me get to where I am today and I am so grateful for such a strong community of photographers here in Arizona.

Please tell us about your art.
I am a natural light photographer specializing in maternity, family and children portraits. I love to tell stories through what I photograph. My goal in every photo shoot is to capture those special moments, those silly quirks and those little things that make you who you are. If I can do that, then you can relive those simple, special moments in your life – or your children’s lives – and never forget them. I love that I can see the beauty around me and that even the most mundane object can become beautiful when you photograph it in a creative way.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think that photography is something that a lot of people love to have and that they treasure so it keeps photographers busy. Between weddings, newborns, updated photos of your family or children, seniors etc. there is always someone out there that wants a photographer.

With photography there are always up and downs. I definitely think that photography is noticed a lot more today than it was when I was growing up.

Community over competition! Help others that have questions or want to learn from you. Be nice, help others and make a new friend that has the same interest as you! Phoenix, AZ has a huge photography community and it is amazing how nice everyone is and how helpful they all are. You do not see that everywhere and it is a breath of fresh air knowing there are so many that are willing to help you excel!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
