Meet Ashley Camhi of Camhi Environmental Consulting and Arizona Sustainability Alliance in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Camhi.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Tempe about four years ago after working for multilateral banks as a consultant on environmental and conservation projects in Latin America and the Caribbean for several years. I decided to start a consulting firm in order to combine the expertise of people that are working in the field and those that are doing research.

In addition, this past year I also started the Arizona Sustainability Alliance, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create and support cutting-edge, project-based sustainability solutions in Arizona. The organization has grown to over 300 volunteers working mostly in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area on a range of topics, everything from urban forestry to renewable energy. The nonprofit is a space for people to work on grassroots projects in schools, communities, cities, etc.

I have learned immensely this year from both the consulting firm and the nonprofit. For the consulting firm, I have learned to target smaller projects and work with nonprofits as opposed to the larger projects done by multilateral banks that I was accustomed to working on. I have learned how to fundraise, target social media, manage a large team, and inspire others through my work with the nonprofit. I have definitely struggled with managing my own expectations both organizations.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Camhi Environmental Consulting and Arizona Sustainability Alliance – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The goal of the consulting firm is to provide innovative and high-quality solutions to global environmental issues. What sets us apart from others is how this goal is achieved: through a foundational team of experts across the technical spectrum with quantitative and qualitative skill sets working together to create a new way of addressing old and new environmental challenges. We specialize in project design, implementation, and evaluation for environmental economics, ecotourism, agriculture, and conservation.

The Arizona Sustainability Alliance accomplishes its work through civic engagement, collaboration, and education. We empower Arizona citizens to work together toward more verdant, equitable and sustainable communities. We share a deep concern about sustainability issues and work to increase knowledge with a focus on education in the following areas: Develop and demonstrate cutting-edge and innovative solutions to environmental issues; provide Arizona residents with simple, manageable solutions to address everyday needs in a more sustainable manner; and promote and support existing sustainability initiatives to ensure that every Arizona resident understands their impact on the environment. I am really proud of the wonderful people that I volunteer with, how far we have come in less than a year, and the structure that we have in place for the organization to grow.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am looking forward to working with so colleagues this year to expand the work that the consulting firm is doing.
