Today we’d like to introduce you to Asaya Shutters.
Thanks for sharing your story with us. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am from the city of Port-Harcourt, In Nigeria West Africa. I am a photographer, this is how it all started. I grew up attending a lot of events such as baby showers, birthdays, weddings, engagement parties, fashion shows, and house parties. I always see two or more people with camera’s trying to capture these beautiful moments and at the end of most weddings or fashion shows they always have prints ready for people to see. so I fell in love with the images the camera created. At the age of 14, I started looking into photography, but I didn’t have enough resources to become a photographer.
At the age of 16, I got my first camera which was a sony 16megapixles camera, at first it was a basic point and shoot. I started taking pictures of my surroundings and also learning the camera basic functions and having a proper understanding of the camera. I started taking pictures at the church I attended and I noticed people loved it, I saw how much joy it gave to them and I said to myself I will have to take this photography thing serious. Then there was a big move which was moving to the united states. I had access to the internet and I made good use of it researching different types of photography. bought my first DSLR camera started taking pictures of the Beautiful mountains, Arizona has a lot of beautiful mountains and also beautiful people.
Then I had the chance to cover a small non-profit organization event, a few fashion shows and I saw how good the photos came out and I decided to take it up to a level where I could get paid for photo coverage, from portrait sessions to covering baby showers, weddings, fashion shows, engagement parties. I said to be known out here I need a name and that’s when the name Asaya came to mind. Asaya is Hebrew which means God created and people ask me why that and I tell them God will create a good line of clientele for me in this line of work.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Well, it hasn’t really been a smooth road there are quite a few bumps here and there. The struggle of being a freelance photographer is you can go months without being booked and the next month you are booked. Also, pricing plays a big role, sometimes people don’t agree with the prices, you face different struggles such as lack of funds most times to update or upgrade gears.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
