Today we’d like to introduce you to Arleen Karch Vera.
Arleen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey as an interior designer started before even knowing interior design was a profession.
Starting at seven years old, I was drawing floor plans, taking color notes during painting projects (my father was a painting contractor by day and an artist by night), and learning the important details for selecting the right kinds of fabrics when sewing with my mom.
This desire for making a house a home increased during the two years I lived in Paraguay, working with and helping the local community. That experience forever changed the way I think about home and design.
From there, I had a wonderful chapter of raising a family before receiving a college degree in interior design, working in trade-only furniture and fabrics showrooms, and expanding my working knowledge into commercial hotels and casino projects.
The journey has been wonderful and full, and it makes me excited for the next adventures of business and life!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges was when it came time to start my own business, Avera Interior Design.
Leaving my 9-5 employment was simultaneously the most exciting and scariest thing I’ve ever done. Yet after many years of learning the ins and outs of the interior design industry, I was ready to take more control: decide which kinds of clients and projects, ensure I continued traveling to Latin America regularly, and ultimately dedicate myself to creating homes that make an impact for everyone who crosses their thresholds.
It hasn’t been a total cakewalk, there have been a few challenges along the way, including navigating the business and projects during the global pandemic. The traditional methods for running a design business, from how to work with clients to planning around supply chain issues, became a daily exercise in creatively solving challenges.
Thankfully, I had many wonderful clients, business connections, and family and friends who shared a
a tremendous amount of support along the way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Avera Interior Design?
Avera Interior Design is a full-service interior design firm based in Phoenix, Arizona, and we specialize in integrating form and function, without compromising style or value, when building or remodeling forever homes.
We ensure that our client’s dream home is designed to be a positive environment for them to fully rest and connect with family and friends. By handling the details of their projects, they continue to enjoy life to the fullest during this experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’m a firm believer that opportunities are all around us, and when we are prepared for them, we get “lucky”.
Take technology as an example. Had I not jumped into learning AutoCAD and other technology platforms related to design and projects, I would miss out on collaborating in innovative ways with some great clients and teams.
Ultimately, what can sometimes feel like luck is the inevitable result of investing time and energy into areas of life that produce the right kind of opportunities…and then being ready to run with them when they appear!
