Today we’d like to introduce you to April Maxey.
Hi April, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved spaces.
As a young girl, I was constantly rearranging and redecorating my room—moving furniture, changing colors, imagining how the space could feel different, better, more me. I would walk into homes, classrooms, or gathering spaces and instinctively envision what they could become. I didn’t know it then, but design was already woven into who I was.
Over the years, that passion naturally grew. I found myself helping friends and family reimagine their homes—choosing finishes, rearranging layouts, and creating spaces that felt more welcoming and intentional. What started as something I simply loved became something others began to rely on.
Eventually, I realized something important: gifts and talents aren’t given randomly. They’re entrusted to us for a purpose. And if I had been given an eye for design, creativity, and the ability to see potential in spaces, then maybe it wasn’t meant to stay a hobby—it was meant to be shared.
I believe the world needs welcoming homes. Spaces where people feel comfortable, confident, and at peace. Homes where community can be built, conversations can happen, and life can be lived fully—sometimes around a kitchen island, sometimes around a table, sometimes while simply cracking an egg into a bowl and starting from scratch.
So I decided to step out in faith and officially begin my own business.
April Dawn Design was created to help others turn their houses into homes—spaces that reflect who they are, support how they live, and invite others in with warmth and intention.
This isn’t just about design.
It’s about creating places where life happens.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As life unfolded, I took a meaningful detour. I stepped into teaching, driven by a desire to change lives, encourage others, and make an impact beyond myself. Those years shaped me deeply. They taught me how to listen, how to serve, and how to see the value in people—skills that would later become just as important in design. Even then, my love for creating beautiful, intentional spaces never went away. It simply waited.
Over time, that passion resurfaced more clearly than ever. I found myself once again helping friends and family reimagine their homes—choosing finishes, rearranging layouts, and creating spaces that felt more welcoming and intentional. What started as something I loved quietly became something others consistently sought out.
Along the way, I worked for another design company—an experience that challenged me and refined my perspective. It showed me firsthand how important it is to make the client the top priority. That lesson stayed with me. Design isn’t just about beautiful spaces; it’s about listening well, honoring trust, and serving people with care and integrity.
So I decided to step out in faith and officially begin my own business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My specialty at April Dawn Designs is really listening to my clients and creating spaces that reflect who they are. I focus on designs that are not only beautiful and comfortable, but highly functional—spaces where people can truly relax, feel confident, and be themselves in their own home. I specialize in creating warm, welcoming environments that support everyday living and make room for connection and community.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is using the talents God has given me in a way that honors Him while truly serving my clients. I always aim to put people first and operate with integrity throughout the entire process. At the end of a project, what’s most important to me is that my clients feel happy, relaxed, and comfortable in their home—like it genuinely supports their life. I love creating spaces that feel cozy and welcoming, places where they feel confident inviting others in and building community.
