Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Berube.
Annie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am the owner, baker, and decorator of CopCake Cakery. I started baking for fun while working the midnight shift as a patrol officer with the local police department. As I made cakes and experimented with flavors, co-workers began to refer me out to other officers/people who began to call and ask for “CopCake” in order to place orders. I enjoyed the process of decorating so much, I decided to save my money and vacation time. I then left for two months to attend the Bonnie Gordon School of Confectionary Art’s in Ontario Canada in 2015. Upon my return to Arizona, I began to focus on CopCake Cakery and started working on growing my small home business. I initially worked both at the local police department full time and did my cakes on the weekends on a part-time basis. As of eight months ago, I decided to leave the local police department and focus on my cakes.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My experience has not been as smooth as many would think. My first hurdle was working full-time employment while attempting to grow a small home business. Balancing home life, work and my business have been complicated and at times tiresome.
One of my goals for 2019 is to grow my business by becoming accessible to the wedding market. Attempting to access venues has been more difficult than expected. Networking and growing my wedding cake profile has become a priority as of recent in order to achieve this goal by the end of 2019.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about CopCake Cakery – what should we know?
My specialty is buttercream. I enjoy the challenge of making a beautiful cake with nothing but buttercream, where others would have to use fondant, The process of brainstorming and having to come up with new inventive ways to achieve the desired look on a cake is exciting to me. The creative freedom of cake decorating is what makes the CopCake Cakery brand grow. I strive to provide my customers with unique and beautiful one-of-a-kind cakes.
Do you feel luck has played a role in your life?
Luck has not played a role in my life or business, hard work, dedication, and support from my husband are what has allowed me to grow as a cake decorator and a small business owner.
