Meet Annie Alexander of Beyond Words Artist Books & Handmade Paper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Alexander.

Annie Alexander has always been a creator. For many years she worked as a graphic designer, choosing the right papers to reflect the product or service, relishing the teamwork with printers. Annie now creates beautiful and unique handmade papers and Artist Books. She gleans plant fibers from her mountains and creeks and hunts for linens at Goodwill. Her subjects often mirror the events in her rural life. Annie ‘s art reflects the tension between the fragility and strength of Nature and expresses the universe of texture and pattern that lies just below the threshold of our consciousness.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
-There’s always the urge to create.
-Believing my work is good has been the challenge.
-Marketing is also elusive.

Please tell us about Beyond Words Artist Books & Handmade Paper.
My handmade paper website explains my paper art most comprehensively. When I create an artist Book, I incorporate all the skills I have. It is a symphony of designing, engineering, printing, drawing, painting, bookbinding, writing, photography and computer acumen. My books and papers are in National Collections, and many of my friends enjoy them as well.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
I lease respect the good old boy politics that seem to pervade Prescott.

I love the air, the light, the forest, and creatures. The people are nice too.
