Meet Anne McAuley Lopez of Blogging Badass in Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne McAuley Lopez.

Anne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Blogging Badass is the result of being kicked out of corporate America in 2010 and realizing I wanted to pursue my dream of being a professional writer.

Back then, we didn’t even know what to call social media and the only people blogging were mom bloggers, but a mighty few of us knew writing content was important to establishing businesses as experts and getting them noticed on search engines. I set a course of networking and learning how to make content writing business.

These days, I am focused on being a Blogging Badass, writing content that is relevant and engaging and connects businesses to their target audience. My key areas of focus are money, digital marketing, health & wellness, non-profit, travel, real estate, and pets.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Over the years I’ve made decisions that I wish I could take back, but I consider it all part of the growth process. For example, I’ve put all of my proverbial eggs in one basket, relying on one or two web designers to funnel business my way. That was a mistake because I was not in control of my business.

While those relationships are great, they can’t be the only lead generator. To that end, I now focus my efforts on networking with like-minded business owners, keeping in touch with key contacts, and sourcing my own clients, in addition to partnering with other marketing professionals.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Blogging Badass – what should we know?
As a content writer, I work with my clients to understand their business, target clients, and brand voice. What sets me apart is the process I created and utilize with my clients.

The question I am asked most is, “How do you get what’s in my head, onto my website?” and the answer is threefold.

1. For those that don’t have time but understand the value of content as it relates to being found online, they let me have free reign to write on topics related to their business.

2. For those that want a hand in the content, we do a monthly call to discuss topics, gain their insights, and then I research the topics and write.

3. For others it works to record an interview, transcribe, and use for blog content and/or the brain dump on a topic or two in an email and I edit and reformat so that it is search engine friendly.

Most clients are #2 or #3 because this gives them a voice in what we’re writing without them having to be an expert on keywords and search engine optimization.

What’s your outlook for the industry over the next 5-10 years?
I am excited about the latest Google updates which make it necessary to not only be producing content on a regular basis but to also utilize keywords. Back in 2010, there was what the industry called Black Hat SEO meaning keywords were stuffed all over websites and blogs without thought to whether the content itself was useful or relevant.

Over the years, Google has moved from this type of search engine optimization, and the latest update recognizes what content writers like me have been doing for years – combining keywords and relevant content in meaningful ways so that not only is it found but that it is helpful to users. It is my hope that this trend continues.
