Today we’d like to introduce you to Annamarie Rodney.
Annamarie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I became a doula 7 years ago after the birth of my first daughter. I realized how important having support in pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum was and I wanted to support families as they entered this important new time in their lives. At the time I was a Special Education teacher and still trying to figure out how to turn this passion into a career. I trained to be a Happiest Baby on the Block Instructor and Hypnobirth Instructor and opened up my first business, Chicago Family Doulas. Chicago Family Doulas now has grown to a team of 18 labor and postpartum doulas and after moving to Arizona in August I opened Arizona Doulas. I now own and operate both full-service doula agencies.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a smooth road. Running a business is, of course, time-consuming and a lot of learning and work, but it has been well received by families, doctors and related specialists. A doula seems to still be a newer concept to many people so perhaps the most challenging part is to bring awareness as to what we can do and how we can help.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Arizona Doulas story. Tell us more about the business.
Arizona Doulas is a full-service doula agency. We offer support in pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum. Our postpartum doulas support families day and night helping families to recover, rest and bond with their baby or babies. We also teach classes and provide placenta encapsulation. We are one of the first full-service doula Agencies in Arizona and we are extremely dedicated to providing families with professional, compassionate and personalized support.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
Doula support is in the beginning stages and less than 3% of our population utilizes this support. It is rapidly growing in popularity in the larger cities and in 5-10 years from now, I would expect that 10% or more of the population will be utilizing doulas.
