Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Fabrizio.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My path to becoming a graphic designer was full of lots of detours and bumps. Although I started out as an artist, I felt an internal and pressure to find a practical career path in college. I found myself bouncing between business and social science majors, not really being happy with one or the other, but continuing to put pressure on myself to find something that I could have quick success in. It wasn’t until I started a social media internship at a design studio that I opened my eyes to life outside of the confines I had put myself in. I was taught not only how to create meaningful brands but over time what it means to really be a graphic designer. It is not just creating pretty pictures but thinking from many different perspectives to find the best answer to every problem. I was shown that art and business do mix and when done right, it can turn a brand into a success story. Here is where I found a marriage between my art background and my studies. Now I find myself a few years out of college with the confidence to start my own business and continue the work of building meaningful brands!
Please tell us about your art.
I am a graphic designer. My main focus and favorite projects are creating meaningful brands. For a lot of people who come to me, they have spent many months or even years nurturing the idea they have for their business, so as a designer I make sure to treat it with the care it deserves.
There is so much potential in branding! If done right you can go from 0 visibility to people driving down the street or scrolling through there Instagram feed and spot to say “that is sweet!”. As cheesy as that sounds, this is many people struggle when they have an idea that is just not clicking with potential clients. This is where a designer comes in. I would sit down with a client and talk through everything about their wants and needs and try my best to diagnose the misstep.
I had a great teacher in college tell me that there are three steps to a brand – meaningful, different and salient. Although it is important (and my favorite part as an artist) to focus on creating a beautiful logo, making sure it is salient is one of the most important parts and easily forgotten steps to branding. If you are creating a brand of your own, make sure you go to your designer and ask them why their designs are going to set you apart from the competition and stand the test of time. Don’t be afraid to be bold with your brand!
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I learned very early on in my career that feeling successful is an internal decision. When you start to define it in comparison to what other artist are doing, it almost feels like a constant climb that you will never reach the top of. With platforms like Instagram, it is very easy getting wrapped up in that and is still a struggle for me! It’s a daily decision to do the best work you can do, and I truly believe people will appreciate and hire those who do so.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
In the past few years, I have seen a rise in quick-design. Lots of larger companies put make-your-own logo or brochure with a set template and about a 5-minute turn over time. Although this is easy, as a designer I see how quickly it is squashing creativity and variety. Reach out to a local graphic designer and tell them you are working with a limited budget. This is not only supporting independent artists, but it gives you the opportunity to have something no one else has seen before. If you are looking to support graphic designers like myself, this is the best way to do it!
