Meet Angela Carter of Nrysh Yoga in Downtown Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Carter.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Angela. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My wellness journey started at a young age and in college, I wanted to take the health path, but I also liked to have fun. A LOT. So after dabbling in a few majors, I settled on Human Development, where I could study health and well being, but practicing what I preached might not be as important or obvious. It’s also pretty general and ended up being a good choice to gain experience in a lot of very random areas. I worked in textiles and clothing for a few years, both production and design. I managed boutiques and did buying for an eclectic gift and clothing stores, worked with theatre companies doing stage managing, lighting and costume design, and finally found a great wellness and personal care company that I made my home for almost 15 years. Throughout my adult life, I’ve continuously moved around; one year, I even had to file taxes in four states. With this corporate company, I still got to move, travel, and explore a bit; and it reignited that sense of purpose I had been missing with all of my other jobs. I was helping people, educating people, learning, sharing, feeling, and enjoying. Until I wasn’t, 15 years is a long time. The company changed and I changed and finally, it was time for a change.

I studied a ton, got certifications in everything wellness you can think, left the company, and went to Thailand for my third attempt at yoga teacher training. I’d attempted twice before, but either moved for kicks and giggles or got transferred for work. I was originally doing my yoga certification just for my personal practice and even this last time, didn’t really think I’d end up teaching. Holistic nutrition has been my passion for years and I felt that yoga and the eight limbs were essential tools to add-in. Nutrition isn’t just food in the same way that yoga isn’t just asana, and it turns out I loved it even more than I thought. I finally finished and was certified.

I created a coaching company called NRYSH (a play on the word nourish) and was working with clients to create overall wellness. Shortly after I started this new endeavor, my husband and I moved from San Diego to Phoenix. He’s an amazing artist and photographer and we found a space large enough for him to create and showcase his work. At the same time, I could do coaching, AND it was perfect to open a small yoga studio. NRYSH Yoga was born.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish 🙂 Now, with COVID 19, they seem endless! But I know that it’ll all work out and we are extremely lucky to be healthy. Along the way, a major struggle has been with myself, both physically and mentally. Trying to find the balance for yourself that you are working on with others is very difficult. I think it’s why I didn’t go this direction a hundred years ago when choosing a college major. There’s that ‘impostor syndrome’ and am I good enough to do this, who am I to suggest this or that…I also used running, and basically nothing else, as an exercise and outlet for many years and that’s something physically I’m still recovering from. An inflexible yoga teacher? Luckily I have some amazing mentors and am finishing up my yoga therapy certification, so all of that evil self-talk is a little quieter. Our bodies and minds want to heal. We just have to create a healthy environment so it can happen.

Moving and starting over with new clients has been more difficult than I anticipated as well, I’ve focused more on marketing and building the actual yoga space. A benefit of COVID… so much time to fine-tune and redirect. One last obstacle that never crossed my mind… the name NRYSH has created a number of challenges and I’m sure you can imagine why!

Nrysh Yoga – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
NRYSH is a yoga and wellness company. It’s a play on the word nourish but actually isn’t an acronym. When Sebastian and I were first throwing around ideas for names of my new biz this came up, we played with the spelling and I ultimately thought I’d settle on something specific. Natural, nutritional, real, remedies, yoga, you, supplement, sustainability, health, holistic, on and on. It evolved so many times that I finally just left it alone. NRYSH started as a holistic coaching company that included private yoga and movement training but has evolved to include a yoga studio space with multiple classes and a variety of styles offered.

Our mission is to help create more energy, clarity, and balance within each individual human. We do this through empowering you and looking at three main focuses: physical, mental, and nutritional. All of these are intertwined and specific to each person, so you get what you need for you. We are accountability, reliability, and compatibility.

Come to the NRYSH studio to do yoga, yoga gives us time to reflect and awaken, yoga meets us where we’re at and helps us look within. Sometimes it’s rest we seek, sometimes it’s energy, we can find either in both stillness and movement. If we listen, we find what we need on the mat most of the time. Decide what to take with and what to leave behind. NRYSH is here if you need or want a little more; everyone gets a free consult and we will create your personal wellness journey and plan from there.

The beautiful women I’ve taught beside for the last year make me most proud of this company. I didn’t anticipate meeting or getting to partner with such dynamic and inspiring souls, each of them has amazing talent and offerings and I hope you come in to meet them! We look forward to seeing you soon. Join us and NRYSH yourself or contact us to set up online.
