Meet Andy Beran of Quality Transport Services of Arizona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Beran.

Andy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After business school, I was recruited by Intel as a financial analyst. I worked for Intel for 21 years, eventually as a senior executive, after positions in finance, marketing, strategic planning, manufacturing, and operations. After “retiring”, I became an entrepreneur and a mentor to other entrepreneurs and small business owners. After a few start-ups, I got involved with Quality Transport Services of Arizona (QTS).

I was intrigued by the mission and business of QTS and the story of its founding. I felt I could help the very talented team and build on the company’s success. I acquired the company in 2010.

Since that time, the company has grown to become the largest non-emergency medical transportation company in Phoenix. We provide services to 200 medical facilities and thousands of private pay passengers – completing over 50,000 trips a year. The majority of our passengers use a wheelchair or a stretcher, and require additional assistance to get where they need to go.

QTS now has a fleet of late model custom vehicles, 24-hour operations, and is led by a team of passionate managers.

Has it been a smooth road?
My career has included large business, small business, start-ups, consulting, and mentoring.

My education was in business and I was quite successful as an executive for a large technology company. The transition to entrepreneurial life was challenging.

In “big business” the key skill is knowing who to call and how to hire the best people to complement your own capabilities. In “small business” you do everything yourself.

Over time I got pretty good at it – good enough to mentor other entrepreneurs and small company owners.

I find that my broad experience and my ability to learn on the job has helped me grow as a business owner and allows me to give back to the community.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Quality Transport Services of Arizona story. Tell us more about the business.
QTS is a non-emergency medical transportation company.

We specialize in assisted transportation for those in wheelchairs or stretchers. Our team is trained to provide safe, reliable, affordable, and convenient transportation services.

We have implemented advanced systems that allow us to accept 99% of the requested rides at the time requested (unusual in this industry) and be on-time 99% of the time (almost unheard of). This allows us to minimize the effort required by medical staff to arrange for transportation and reduces the total cost of transportation.

We say what we will do, and do what we say. Period.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There are two macro trends impacting transportation – one near term and one longer term.

The first is the shift to “on-demand” transportation. Companies like Uber and Lyft have begun to educate customers that transportation should be as available and reliable as pushing a button on your smartphone. This hasn’t yet reached medical transportation, but it will.

Longer term is the introduction of self-driving or autonomous vehicles. At first, they won’t meet the needs of the disabled (and elderly), but when they do, it will change the industry, and change the lives of millions of people.
