Today we’d like to introduce you to Amish Shah.
Amish, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am an Emergency Physician and have been practicing for over 15 years. I came to Arizona for a one year fellowship in Sports Medicine at the U of A in Tucson. After finishing, I decided to stay here instead of returning to my faculty position in New York City. After traveling all over our state to work in many different Emergency Departments, I became involved in the local community by founding a large city festival and becoming a board member with local charities. In 2016, I became interested in local politics and eventually was elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2018. I currently represent LD24 (Central Phoenix and South Scottsdale).
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To get elected, I recruited a stellar team and worked very hard! I personally knocked on 8034 doors over an 18 month period and made contact with over 4000 households, often in the intense Phoenix heat. But the journey was more than worth it.
Amish For Arizona – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My candidacy revolved around several themes, including door knocking to establish face to face contact with constituents myself, the primacy of listening, refusal of ALL special interest money, avoidance of any negative campaigning, and continual communication with our supporters.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
As an Emergency Physician, I have been present for and helped people through some of the most difficult times in people’s lives, including trauma, childbirth, mental health crisis, or severe medical illness to name a few. Easing pain, listening and understanding, providing information and helping to diagnose and hopefully cure disease for countless people has been an honor and a privilege for me personally.
