Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Jorde.
Hi Allie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Growing up I always wanted to be just like my older sister. Whether that meant taking a pair of scissors to a brand-new pair of jeans to attain the “perfectly distressed” look that my sister was sporting or asking my mom to paint my bedroom the same shade of lavender as my sister’s room, I always thought she was the coolest human. So, when she asked for a Canon Rebel camera for Christmas 15 years ago, so did I. Now, did my parents give a 9-year-old DSLR camera? Absolutely not. But as I watched my sister bloom into an incredible photographer, I was fascinated and knew I also wanted to try my hand at photography. Eventually, I started to second shoot weddings with my sister who had found her niche in Scottsdale and walked away with a little more knowledge every time. I began to do informal portrait sessions with friends, photographing my international trips, and even taking on a few weddings of my own. Before I knew it, I found myself booking weekly sessions and turning a hobby into a career.
When I moved to Guatemala in 2017 to study Human Rights, I had people approach me asking to photography their various creative businesses with everything ranging from hand-woven clothing companies to NGOs that support local Guatemalan children going through grade school. Combining my passion of photography and human rights to help tell stories of the people who live here felt like a dream come true. Since 2017, I’ve been splitting my time between Arizona and Guatemala, shooting everything from weddings to studio sessions here, there, and everywhere in between.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur of any kind is no easy feat. Not only are you CEO, but you’re the chief marketing director, HR, social media guru, and front office all in one. Add in a career that is purely subjective and some people love your work while others don’t is a trip in itself. There is always a level of comparison in my line of work, but every day I wake up I feel so dang lucky to have fallen into this career path.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
While I’ve always been primarily a portrait and wedding photographer, I always say I specialize in photographing women. My only goal when photographing a client is making an individual feel like their most authentic self. I want every client to walk away from a session feeling so confident, so capable, and so loved that they feel like they can take on anything life throws at them. In the last couple of years, I have fallen in love with photographing international retreats, specifically women’s retreats, as well as travel photography. Seeing the world and photographing people from all different walks of life has been an immense honor that I don’t take lightly.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I am a huge proponent of trusting your gut and seeing where the universe takes you. I have allowed myself to follow my heart, sometimes quite blindly, the last 5 years and it’s led me to so many beautiful corners of the world and photograph incredible people. In the next 5-10 years I plan to continue doing just that. If I had to give a more concrete answer, I would say I see myself building my clientele in Arizona and photographing more weddings in the valley. I would love to complete a master’s in photography, because why the hell not, and continue to shoot more retreats around the world.
