Meet Alisia Malta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisia Malta.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
For as long as I can remember, art has always been a part of my life. From a young age, my father was consistently encouraging me to doodle, paint, and draw. One of my favorite childhood memories was sitting on our living room floor and drawing together. He always supported me in my artwork, no matter how silly the subject matter. I drifted away from painting for several years while pursuing my nursing degree, but art presented itself again when I was 23. I took up painting again- which mostly consisted of creating gifts for loved ones. People began to take notice, and soon I was approached for commissions of all different subject matters. Soon after, I was unable to work due to a lower back injury that eventually resulted in a major surgery. It was such a difficult time for me, but art became my therapy through my long recovery. The interest in my art continued to grow, and I started painting more and more. I returned to work full-time as an RN and quickly realized that I wanted to spend more time pursuing my artwork. After a year of working, I decided to take a pay cut so that I could spend more time on my art. It’s been almost a year now, and I can honestly say that was the best decision that I could have made for myself. As of this week, I will have completed more than fifteen commissioned pieces, sold dozens of prints, and participated in several different art shows and live paintings. I’ve continued to work hard towards this passion, and am so incredibly grateful for the community that has supported me along the way.

Please tell us about your art.
I create acrylic paintings, which vary in style and subject matter. I’ve also experimented with resin and digital art as well. My true passion is in the exploration of color and the application of paint to canvas. There really is nothing else like it. My paintings have varied widely because they are all personalized for the client that has commissioned them. Some present sentimental photographs to me, and others just give a list of words to paint from. Several of my paintings have been landscapes, but others are more abstract. I enjoy both but have been exploring into more abstract pieces as of late. My artwork is always a labor of love, as I spend about 40 hours on average with each painting. It becomes a part of me, and I typically have a difficult time separating from it. The intention of my paintings has always been to create an energy on the canvas that elicits emotion in the viewer. I’ve found so much joy in creating my artwork, and only hope to pass that along to my collectors.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
The greatest piece of advice that I could give would be to do something creative every day. Even if it’s a small doodle that takes 5-10 minutes, create something every single day. If you are serious about pursuing your art, you will make this practice a priority. My art has grown so much from this, and I definitely wish that I had started it sooner.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am currently finishing up several commissions but will be creating more pieces very soon. Prints of my artwork are available for purchase at Urban Yoga Phoenix. You can also visit my website at alisiamalta.com to see my previous paintings, and contact me regarding a new commission request.
