Meet Alice Bloomfield of Cozy Baby Sleep

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alice Bloomfield.

Hi Alice, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Most people start their own businesses to pursue financial success, freedom, or perhaps to have a creative outlet. Me? I started my business because my baby would not sleep in her crib for more than 45 minutes EVER! I was exhausted. A total walking zombie. It made me so depressed and I was struggling in motherhood (which when you’ve dreamed of being a mother your whole life, is pretty devastating).

It was in March 2020 at the VERY beginning of the COVID pandemic that I gave birth to my daughter, Lily. With the world scared for their families and well-being, our having a baby kind of became the least of people’s worries and we felt totally alone.

Like many other pandemic baby families (and new parents in general), we completely winged it. Especially when it came to sleep. It wasn’t until my baby was 8 weeks old, I was crying on the balcony rocking my screaming newborn that I decided I wanted to make a change. I could NOT continue this way of life any longer. I wasn’t being a good enough mother to my child in this sleep-deprived state.

So I got to work. I researched and read every book I could find about baby sleep. When I was feeding my baby in the middle of the night I was online reading articles and ebooks about newborn sleep. During the day I would listen to podcasts, and audiobooks, read paperbacks and dive into peer-reviewed studies online all about infant sleep.

Then I started to put all I had learned to practice. We began to implement healthy sleep hygiene practices daily along with gradual sleep-shaping techniques at bedtime. Within a week I was seeing incredible improvement. We even got a 7-hour stretch from her one night! I was a new woman! I felt alive again, and I loved living with my baby girl.

But the obsession didn’t end there! I continued to read and learn even though my daughter was sleeping great! I called my friends with babies and helped them too if they asked for it! I realized there was a real need for support for other parents when it came to sleep. What they shared at the hospital was excellent information, but there was no step-by-step guidance. Most parents leave the hospital feeling totally lost and confused. I wanted to be a part of a baby sleep support network that I didn’t have.

This was when I decided to get officially certified as an Infant & Toddler Sleep Consultant so I could do this for real.

And the rest is history! I launched Cozy Baby Sleep LLC in early 2021, but I have been honored to serve thousands of families both 1:1 and via my blog, free resources, guides, and online courses! It has been a wild ride, and something I NEVER saw myself doing, but nothing has felt as right to me as this path!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My little business has been a wild ride. I’ve managed to get where I am by working late at night after my children are asleep or during their naps!! It has not been easy in the slightest. Learning the boundaries of social media, work/life balance, and having to force myself to stop working at midnight has been hard. This was especially hard when my Instagram account went viral last summer and my business exploded, but I just couldn’t keep up and had to hire out.

The difference between your own business and working for someone else is that you don’t go home at 5 PM. You are CONSTANTLY working even when you aren’t. You’re always thinking of ideas to improve your business, learn more about your field, and then fit in raising a family and making time for your relationship too! It’s been a hard struggle!

I actually decided to see a therapist over the summer of 2021! She helped me to create a much better work-life balance. This…. along with bad experiences, and the general ups and downs of starting a business has helped me grow as a business owner, and I feel much more confident going into 2023 and beyond.

What do I want the world to know about my story? It is REAL!! I have been there… twice!! Exhausted, lost, hopeless and confused. I am currently in the trenches of toddlerhood and infant life WITH YOU. I’ve scrolled through social media confused by all the conflicting parenting advice. I’ve overcome horrible weeks of sleep deprivation, feeding issues, and isolation in motherhood. My job is to help you navigate your baby’s sleep in a way that makes you feel comfortable, supported, heard…. and of course…. better rested!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Cozy Baby Sleep LLC?
My business right now is just me, and I hire my sister, Meg, as a virtual assistant. I couldn’t do my business without her. She has enabled me to serve better by taking care of the time-consuming administration that has to be done. I have all these ideas and it’s meg that makes gets it sorted!!

I went on to hire a wonderful brand strategist and designer Rebecca Peterson (of @rebeccapetersonstudio) who has been fundamental to my brand transformation. It went from a DIY stay-at-home mum look, to an amazing brand that I am proud of, and it has truly made a difference in my business! It’s not just about how it looks (which is amazing), but it’s also about putting across the right message. Finally, I hired Lanae Carmichael from @lanaewritescopy to help me with email marketing and really transform my website copy to share my values in a better way! It was amazing to have a professional help me through that process.

In terms of what sets me apart, I think it’s just that I’m all about balance and flexibility in sleep. I offer safe, loving, and research-based sleep education for tired families, without all those inflexible rules, and without guilt. Better baby sleep without rigid schedules. Confidence in the inevitable ups and downs of baby sleep.

So what do I want people to know?

Yes, I’m a business, but this has been built from my genuine love for helping you: a tired parent. I genuinely care for your success in baby sleep, and your confidence in sleep hood (lol).

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
Honestly, what matters most to me is family. My family (obv) is what matters the most to me in my personal life, and I know that is what matters the most to my audience too.

Within my business, what matters most is ensuring that every family is empowered to choose a sleep method that works best for THEIR family. We all thrive differently as families and no baby sleep situation is one size fits all, but it doesn’t mean you can’t learn to tune into your baby, and their individual sleep quirks, and get great sleep along the way.
