Meet Alexus Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexus Young.

Alexus, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started doing nails when I was 7 or 8. I would wear press-on nails all the time and design and color them whatever. I never thought of it as a career until January 2021. I decided to start doing my own nails, I bought everything I needed and got to work. I still didn’t think about doing it as a career until my sister and friend wanted me to do their nails.

I would practice on them and myself. As I started to get better, it made me want to pursue nails in a professional setting. My husband saw my potential and pushed me at times I wanted to give up because I didn’t feel like my work looked like what I would see on instagram.

He helped me look for schools and found one that was perfect for my work schedule since I still had a regular full-time job. I started going to school in July 2022 and was expected to graduate by January 2023. Going to school and working was so difficult for me. It felt like I was never going to finish school and I was miserable at work, I hit a point of wanting to give up again. But once I realized how far I’d come, I pushed myself to finish and graduated school a month early. Right now I’m in the process of getting Lexielicious Nails LLC’d and even exploring other options in the nail world. I love my work and can’t wait to see where I’m at with it in 2024.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. I always compared my work to others, especially when I first started.

It would take me 5-6 hours to do a full set, and the outcome never looked like what I would see on social media.

Turning away clients can be hard as enforcing your policy. Also trying to gain clients is a challenge in itself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love doing long dramatic nails! Rhinestones, glitter, designs, big charms.

It makes the hands and the person POP. Stand out from others. I do my own nails and people always compliment me. My clients tell me how they get so many compliments on their nails or stopped in public. My creativity and dedication set me aside from others.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I’ve always loved anything that involved beauty.

Hair, nails, makeup, and skincare. I never grew up wanting to do beauty as a profession. I wanted to be a veterinarian at one point, a pharmacy technician at another, and a librarian too. The moral of the story, the things I wanted to be weren’t things that I loved and enjoyed doing. But now, being a nail tech feels different. It’s right.
