Meet Alexis Borja of BOSS Entertainment in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Borja.

Alexis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I danced for a team that allowed me to practice costume design. I experimented with sewing and theatrical makeup while go-go dancing for various events, including large-scale festivals! I eventually grew bigger and started my own gogo dancing team! We began choreographing pieces early on while incorporating my costume design. We dance for nightclubs, music festivals, company parties, burlesque and variety shows, and more!

Being self-taught, I believe that if I can do it, anyone can! BOSS Entertainment now offers dance classes, a costuming team, theatrical makeup workshops, and fitness events, Within our team, we call it BOSS Academy! Every dancer has different strengths and they teach what know while learning from others! While I am the creative director, I give every dancer the opportunity to lead in order for us to grow creatively together! We are continuously inspired by each other, building each other’s talent and opening up possibilities for growth!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When the team first started, it was difficult to find talent as we didn’t have as many gigs. Without gigs, talent would not come to us. At the same time, more gigs meant that we were stretched thin as there weren’t enough dancers to supply for all the clients who needed them. I couldn’t find the balance between the two! It has become better now, and with more talents and more variety of gigs, I can keep both the dancers and the clients happy!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BOSS Entertainment – what should we know?
We started off as ambient dancers for nightclubs, typically the inspiration for patrons to start dancing! We specialize and are known for our costume design. A burlesque company, Romantasy Cabaret, invited us to do choreographed pieces for their burlesque and variety shows. We have been doing choreographed pieces ever since, which most gogo dance teams do not do. We can supply fit, talented dancers to perform choreography in crazy costumes!

I am most proud of our team’s artistic and professional mentality! I expect everyone to be a BOSS in their own life and carry that mentality in our team! Be professional, strive to challenge yourself and always learn something new! Then, give back to the community by teaching what you know and help advance the team together! The better we are at what we do, the more quality work we put out, satisfying our clients from all fronts!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Everyone around me has played a big role in my success! I thank the old gogo dance team for allowing me to practice my craft! I thank my original 6 dancers for helping me start off the team! I thank my first venue, Monarch Theatre, for giving us a place to dance! I thank my theatrical makeup teacher, Mallory Prucha, for not only teaching me makeup techniques but also teaching me how to empower a student!

I thank the owner of Romantasy Cabaret, Lucy Morals, for continuously believing in me and opening me up to the world of choreographed performances and teaching dance classes! I thank my best friend, Jayna Smith, for teaching me the basics of crafting! I thank my partner in crime, Ray Villaraza, for being my moral support, my financial backing, and for the creator of my marketing materials! Without these people, I would not be where I am today!
