Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Whitefeather.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Around 11, I really got into documenting life. If you ask my mom she’ll tell you that she almost never had to take pictures of my sisters as I was most likely already doing it. At 16 I graduated from high school and got my first “real”(paid) photo job which I’m not going to lie, I kinda wasn’t ready for! (oh 16-year-old Al, you had so much to learn…)
Growing up I always thought I was going to study interior design in college, but my mind changed the more I got out for shoots, and I realized that I wanted photography to be my JOB job. I did end up studying graphic design in college because hey! why not spend a ton of money on design school anyway, right?! (that was sarcasm. ;))
To pay for school (and ya know life) I got a job as a preschool teacher (for a year) and then as an ophthalmic tech. I worked in the medical field for about 6 years while doing photography on the side and eventually quit my job and went full time! It was a process for sure!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sometimes of struggle would be:
-When I was working full time, going to school full time and still trying to work with photography. (it was a bit much and definitely stressful).
-Moving across the country. At 19 I moved from Florida to Arizona, and it was an adjustment for sure! (umm, where’s the water?)
-Losing my father in 2012 as he was a big source of inspiration for me. I actually went through a period where I didn’t do photography at all! In fact, I started a loose leaf tea company with my husband that year as a distraction. About 3 years later I closed it after having my daughter. As much as I love tea, I realized as a new mother I had to focus on just one business. You just can’t do ALL the things, you know?
-Learning the business side of things. Luckily having the tea company taught me so so much, but there still was (and is) a lot to learn in the creative business world. As most all creative business owners know, it’s not all about the CREATING. It’s also about bookkeeping, taxes, invoices, meetings, schedules, emails, etc.
And later… adjusting to life as a new mother AND business owner. And I gotta be real, it was thankfully the best kind of adjustment thus far!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a photographer and creative director specializing mostly in lifestyle and commercial work. Most all of my work is shot on location, but I recently started shooting a bit in the studio and I love it! The whole process from concept to end product is really important to me, so I’d say I’m most proud of the experience I give each one of my clients.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
It would definitely be all the days at the beach. We lived on the water for most of my childhood and I was at the beach ALL of the time. Swimming in the ocean to find different shells or treasures or sea creatures was (and honestly still is) one of my favorite things to do.
