Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Rubio.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always loved making art since I was a kid, but I didn’t really pursue it until I quit my full-time job about two years ago. I saved enough money for a year, and I had two options: (1) Spend the money on traveling or (2) Utilize the money on pursuing a far away dream I’ve had since I was little. I chose the latter.
Two years into this, and I’m not nearly making as much as I was when I worked on a salary, but I love what I’m doing. I do pick up random part-time art-related jobs, spend most of my time at home, and I live as frugally as possible in order to continue making art. I can say I am now surviving off of freelance work, and I’m constantly learning on how to improve my craft and on ways to effectively run a business.
Please tell us about your art.
My art is based off of experiences I’ve had in the outdoors. Majority of these experiences are based off of climbing trips, lake trips, or any other type of trip where the goal is to interact with nature. My vibrant and almost chaotic work stems from my need to explore more and do more of the things that make me happy.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
(1) Sacrifice. Whether that means time or the things you spend your money on. I saved a lot of money by not eating out, not going out, and quitting my gym membership(s) (Which was a huge deal since I live an incredibly active lifestyle). After I stopped a lot of my previous money spending habits, I gained a lot more time to spend on my art and in my business.
(2) Get a part-time job. While it’s a small part of my income, I like the feeling of knowing I will get a least a short sum of money each month. I also like breaking up my day into multiple types of work activities because let’s be real – I can’t spend all the hours of my day just making art.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
