Meet Alexandra Greco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Greco.

Hi Alexandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue from being a full-time zookeeper. I was looking for a new hobby to dive headfirst in. I was walking by my local Papersource store and saw an advertisement for a hand lettering workshop series that just happened to fall on my days off.

I signed up for the full workshop that very day. After the first class, I knew I was hooked. I started experimenting with different pens and writing surfaces. I started a business on Instagram and started posting pictures of my sample pieces, and found that people were interested in buying my work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Being a small business owner, especially a female and a person of color, has come with a lot of challenges. I had to learn how to do a lot of things like bookkeeping, quarterly taxes, creating a website, etc. through watching tutorials online or simply just winging it, and hoping I didn’t make a mistake.

Even now, a few years into my business, I still make mistakes and am constantly learning from them. Just recently, I started selling wholesale to boutiques across the country and realized that one of my products doesn’t ship well, and is easily breakable. It was a costly mistake, but one I had to see through to the end to improve my business

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m best known for my acrylic signage for weddings and special events. Signs are how I got my business started. Since then, I’ve expanded into creating stickers, drinkware, and apparel! My fall and holiday launches are usually my biggest, and it’s the best feeling to know that others are buying my products to gift to their family and friends.

I’m also really proud that I’ve ventured into the wholesale space this year. I love getting pictures back of display cases with my items in them, and knowing that a little part of me can be found all over the country.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to not fall into a comparison trap of other people doing the same thing as you. It’s easy to compare your work to someone else’s, but everyone operates at their own pace. There is enough room for everyone to exist in the same space, but it’s important that you find your niche and run with it.
