Meet Aleksandra Whiting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aleksandra Whiting.

Aleksandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been in love with my photography since 2008, my husband got me my first fancy DSLR and I wouldn’t put it down. He always thought that we’d use it to take photos of scenery but I enjoyed photographing people.
I became interested in learning more and enrolled in online classes as well as courses from the New York Institute of Photography and continued to hone in on my craft. I had people coming to me asking, even begging me to take their photos and I knew that it was something I wanted to do on a regular basis.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest struggles for me was self-criticism and the lack of understanding from other people. I always felt like I wasn’t good enough, I felt like I could never keep up and the cost of photography wasn’t cheap. I felt like I was hemorrhaging money left and right as I was obsessed with getting the best quality equipment to provide my clients with superior images. Unfortunately, I felt like a lot of people couldn’t tell the difference between amateur images and ones that took a lot of work, investment and education.

Fortunately, with time I discovered that there are, in fact, many people who CAN tell the difference in photographic quality and they wanted ME! It was one of the greatest feelings to realize that I was valued for my hard work! With faith and encouragement from my husband, I continued to push myself to get better and to make myself visible to people who appreciated me as a person and a photographer and I found that my passion was sustainable.

Aleksandra Whiting Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have done with photography since 2008 and dabbled in many genres including nightlife, commercial, family, and birth photography. I learned that I really enjoyed working with mothers and babies (give me ALL the babies) and decided to move toward specializing in maternity and newborn photography about three years ago. As a mother of five, I have a special place in my heart for moms and feel like a lot of my sessions turn into mini “support groups” for new and experienced moms alike. Because newborn sessions can take upwards of 4 hours I have made many new mom friends and have heard many stories, struggles and even cries for help. I feel like my job in this type of photography is not only something I love but is also a calling and I’m thankful to love on all who enter my studio.
Speaking of the studio, I just moved into a gorgeous 1200 sq ft. space where I have many props and outfits as well as maternity gowns. It’s a huge accomplishment because I started photographing in my living room, then moved into my garage and FINALLY, I have the space to let my creativity flow while allowing my clients to be comfortable. It is quite a way from my home in Goodyear but Tempe is central and I want more families to be able to reach me so we decided the commute would be worth it (plus, I enjoy audiobooks on the way!).

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, I don’t consider myself successful until I know that I am making families fall in love with their images. I also want to make sure that my images are displayed in my client’s homes, not only because they like them but because they want to show their children that they were loved from the very start. There’s something really special about a child seeing themselves or their mommies with them in their bellies.
