Meet Alana Mann of The Statesman Group in Arizona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Mann.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Residential real estate development, building and investing has historically been a male-dominated industry, so for me, it’s been all about changing people’s perspectives. I took the helm of my family’s 40-year-old business just over 20 years ago and expanded it from a residential developer based in Alberta, founded by my father, to a multi-divisional developer, builder, investor and manager of condominium, multifamily, resort and senior living communities throughout North America.

Our Scottsdale headquarters is made up of an all-women executive team, many of whom have been with the company for more than a decade. Overall, The Statesman Group employs over 500 people between the U.S. and Canada.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I learned a long time ago that nothing good in life comes without hard work and perseverance. Being a builder/developer presents a myriad of trials and tribulations occurring on a daily basis, which I believe is primarily due to the fact that this industry is intensely dictated by so many other governing bodies and financial situations that are not in our control. We take huge risks injecting millions of dollars into projections forecasted years away and hope and pray that interest rates hold, the economic climate continues to grow, consumer confidence increases and the list goes on.

The Statesman Group – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Statesman Group is a diverse group of companies developing and operating real estate as a legacy family-owned and operated company. Real estate development is “high risk – high reward” and therefore, we must strive to balance a diversified portfolio of different product types within our family company. The creation and development of Manor Village Life Centers, our full-service senior living communities, is most definitely our most proud endeavor! Every time I walk through the lobbies of our Manor Villages, I feel so rewarded from all the smiles and endless hugs from our loving senior residents. Through all the chaos and hustle in our society today, they teach me to appreciate the true essence of life.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I believe the shift is already happening. Owning a 10,000-square foot, single-family home in the middle of the desert is not the American Dream anymore and interested is being shifted to urban living, no maintenance, minimal commitment (renting vs. owning), more social connectivity/entertainment/activities, walkability, convenience, less cars and better technology at higher speeds.
