Today we’d like to introduce you to Agnes Beltran-Goodwine.
Agnes, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico and moved to Delaware at the age of 11. When we moved to America, I had a difficult time finding my footing. I missed Puerto Rico and especially my Abuela (grandmother). I had a few hiccups along my teenage years and became a teenage mother at the age of 16. I feel all my life I’ve had earth angels that have provided me with that extra nudge to direct me in the right path. Those particular individuals were my teachers, school counselors, and community leaders that one way or another convinced me to become involved with community outreach and various programs.
After graduating high school, I was able to participate in the Business Essentials Certificate program at Goldey-Beacom College in Delaware where they taught us basic business concepts. This program helped me attain employment at the Delaware Department of Justice (DOJ). This opportunity would not have been possible without my school counselor and school resources.
I was employed with the DOJ for over six years in the Civil Division as well as the Victim Witness Unit. With this experience, I later ventured to Atlanta, Georgia where I worked in various local municipalities, including the East Point Police Department as Grants Facilitator, which was one of my most favorable positions. In this position, we strengthened local communities by “weeding” out criminal activity and “seeding” the community with crime-prevention tactics and neighborhood-restoration actions. Our team was able to implement and assist after school programs, health fairs, and various family enrichment programs in partnership with local organizations. After the grant ended, I was approached by another one of my earth angels to apply for a position in the City Clerk’s Office, which I hesitantly agreed to not knowing what the job entailed at that time but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I currently hold the position of Deputy City Clerk for the City of Mesa.
For the past twenty five years, I’ve worked in the Public Sector, and that passion for building and strengthening the community has spilled over to my Level Up Tribes Podcast. The Level Up Tribes Podcast is my attempt to build community while providing specific resources to individuals to attain the necessary tools to level up their mind, body, and soul to realize their full potential. My passion is discovering pathways for others to learn, heal, and thrive while providing that extra nudge as someone once did for me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My first struggle upon arriving in Delaware was learning to read and speak English fluently. I entered school in the middle of the school year and thankfully I had English as a Second Language (ESL) courses available to me. My life has not been an easy one, but I have learned to embrace those struggles as it is a part of our life’s journey, and at times the most incredible teachings come from them. I have learned to build my success around those struggles and to persevere in spite of.
Please tell us about your business.
I am the founder and host of The Level Up Tribes Podcast, a platform for entrepreneurs, community leaders, and individuals to share their story while providing resources to help the listeners attain the necessary tools to level up their mind, body, and souls on their journey to realizing their full potential. My passion for people and building communities allows me to provide a platform for guests to give the listeners that extra nudge and hopefully that “golden nugget” to make an impact and make them think while moving towards their purpose.
My proudest moments are when I receive feedback from the listeners that an episode touched their life in some way and caused them to reflect and make some changes.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as achieving the goals that you have set for yourself while making an impact on the lives of others. Everything I do is to impact someone else, it is rarely about me. I gain gratification by simply giving and providing a positive influence on everyone that crosses my path. I believe no one becomes successful on their own, it takes a tribe.
