Meet Adrenee Sterrett of Mahogany Hair in Laveen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrenee Sterrett.

Adrenee, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I decided to take a leap of faith and dive into something I loved… HAIR… more specifically hair extensions. I would always watch videos on YouTube and follow social media pages for some of the “top companies and stylists “ in the hair industry. One thing I noticed was a trend of companies not being too honest when it came to the origin of the hair extensions we buy. I would constantly see “Brazilian, Peruvian and other exotic names for hair they were selling when the truth is, there a very few places that this hair is actually coming from. Through research, some of the main areas our hair extensions are coming from are to name the three biggest; China, Vietnam, India.

I wanted to be able to sell hair and label it with its true origin. I wanted to appeal to ALL buyers. My biggest lesson came from searching for true Russian hair extensions. I came across a lot of Chinese dealers that told to label the hair as “Russian” therefore. Their clients were able to sell that hair 3-4x the normal rate. When I actually came in contact with European dealers and purchased hair, it was extremely expensive.

As of today, I am still expanding my knowledge base. I want to be able to offer a more personalized experience when purchasing hair extensions. I try to talk to my clients about what they are really wanting in hair and give them all options, not just the expensive ones. I am working on building inventory so I can offer same day drop off in the Phoenix area. I am also working on building my website. I offer hair extensions from Vietnam, India, China (lace only) and will be adding Other countries after proper research. Current methods offered are regular weft, tape-in, itip, clip-in, lace closures, lace frontals and lace wigs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. You will go through lots of ups and downs, trying to find good vendors. You might order a sample and it looks great and then make a big purchase and get tons a crappy hair. You will spend money and sometimes not make any at the beginning. Looking for support from “friends,” you will find out more support comes from people you don’t even know. My biggest struggle has been establishing a social media presence. I’m a very laid back/private person and I barely share on my personal page.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in unprocessed hair extensions. Meaning you will not find “Brazilian wavy” listed for sale. Now there are vendors who do use raw hair and steam it into curl patterns that most of us love. I believe what sets me apart from others is, I truly care about what I’m selling and I want customers to be happy. I’ve personally put in the time to research and will be planning a trip abroad to continue my research. I’ve ordered lots of hair from “top companies “ and was very disappointed. I would never want my customers to feel like that. Having a nice hairstyle makes you feel good! And I want my customers to feel good.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, my entire life surrounded track and field. Both of my parents ran track and so did me and my sister. We traveled a lot which was a blessing. I’ve always been one to crack jokes and have a good time with people I’m close to.
