Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Homan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Adam. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was originally an 8th grade English teacher, a job in which I was miserable. I was doing metal art for fun and put my work in a few galleries, which sold it immediately. After a couple of years, I was doing art full time and now make my living doing fine art festivals around the country.
As a boy, I came out of Star Wars in 1977 and needed to know how they made that movie, so I started researching the model makers and behind the scenes artists. This inspired me to create my own world and when I found steel I felt like it was the perfect medium to create in.
Early in my career, I was doing the Sausalito Arts Festival and a man came into my booth named Dennis Muren, who happened to be the head of Industrial Light and Magic and was “the guy” behind all the special effects for so many Star Wars movies and others. He loved my work and bought several of my pieces. He currently has more Oscars than any other living person and it was such a serendipitous connection to have.
So, as you can tell, film, as well as animation, had a great influence on me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My parents supported me for the first few years and were very encouraging, I would have never made it without them. Festivals are wonderful when they are good, but things like weather, or location can have a huge effect on shows, so my biggest challenge is generating a consistent income.
Also, metalwork can be hard on the body and after doing it for 25 years now, I have to be conscious of my body.
Please tell us about Adam Homan Metal Sculpture.
I’m really known for fine metalwork and I specialize in characters made from steel and repurposed and recycled parts. My attention to detail and character set me apart.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Too many to list, opening star wars figures on Christmas morning is right up there.
