Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam French.
Adam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my journey in social entrepreneurship with gratitude – a recognition for all of the things I grew up with. A stable home, supportive parents, and food to eat. This gratitude pointed my awareness to finding ways to give back to other people, and the way that I thought would be best was through building and empowering organizations that supported people and made progress on wicked societal problems like food scarcity, climate change, and inequality of opportunity.
My first idea was to build an app that gave people with mental illnesses like depression and anxiety a space to learn from each other, share experiences, and ultimately learn how to alleviate their symptoms through healthy living and positive social connection. That first experience launched me into the amazing startup ecosystem of Phoenix. I met many mentors that encouraged me along my journey. I ended up bouncing around many different companies, from a startup digital agency to founding a construction software company. However, I never started my own business. That changed with emote.design.
I looked back on my experiences of the past 3.5 years and realized that there were a lot of people that I could help with the branding and design skills I’ve honed. However, I only wanted to work people who were trying to solve societal issues with their enterprises. Those two realizations led me to start to emote.design, a business to help social entrepreneurs grow their impact through better communication.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A big struggle along the way was having the growth of my ambitions hit the ceiling of my competence.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business, emote.design, helps social entrepreneurs grow their impact through better communication. Many times, social entrepreneurs are trying so hard to solve a specific problem in the world that they forget to focus on HOW they communicate their value to the world. This makes it difficult for them to gain a community and customers to support their business. emote.design creates better communication strategies through brand strategy, messaging, marketing, visual design, and web development. emote.design is different than a lot of digital agencies and freelancers that provide similar services because of two main reasons.
1. We work specifically with companies that are trying to make the world a better place and can use that expertise in the area to tell their stories in a compelling way, create beneficial partnerships between purpose-driven businesses, and help them create communities around their social movement.
2. emote.design will become an angel investor in promising seed-stage social enterprises, and then deliver the services that enterprise needs to become successful – in this way, we’ll be financially de-risking social investments by making sure they’re using their funds responsibly. No other agency or freelancer invests capital in the companies they serve.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Good luck has manifested in my life many time as timely relationships. I meet someone or catch up with someone that gives me revelations in how I can approach a project in a better way, and it changes how I operate moving forward.
