Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Cooper.
Joe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating from the University of Arizona with a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies of Nutrition & Dietetics, I wasn’t quite sure of where I was going to go from there. My father and brother recommended I take a look at Chiropractic school since I was into the idea of helping people but wasn’t one hundred percent passionate about nutrition consulting. After shadowing multiple Chiropractors and Physical Therapists in the area I noticed the trend of many DC’s doing things drastically different from one another but no matter what their patients loved them and were very appreciative of the hands on the help they were receiving. I flew to San Jose to tour Palmer West and was immediately hooked to become a Chiropractor.
I attended Palmer College of Chiropractic West which was known for its sports background which hyper interested me. I worked hard enough to finish my out-patient services at school significantly earlier than most which led me to land a position with Saint Mary’s College in Moraga working with their Head Athletic Trainer and Medical Doctor acting as the head Chiropractor, overseeing; Strength & Conditioning, Physical Rehab, and Athlete Maintenance for their Division 1 sports program. Eventually, I graduated and moved to Sacramento to work for another Chiropractor. Not knowing anyone there, it was a great adventure and very exciting to revamp a clinic that was established for 27 years prior to me showing up. Having an extensive background in biomechanics, being an active CrossFit athlete, I nuzzled into the fitness community rather fast in Sacramento.
I brought a style of treatment to the area that not too many practitioners were doing such as; Soft Tissue Techniques, applying rehab when necessary, corrective exercise to improve performance, and many other techniques along with manipulation. After three and a half years my cup wasn’t filling the way I wanted it to, and I felt that the way our office was running that it wasn’t best for me to stay on the path I was heading even though I had a plethora of patients and was creating timeless relationships along the way. In October of 2018, my girlfriend and I moved here to Scottsdale so I could open my own clinic and be back home with my family. A few days after relocating, I opened my clinic Active Health Spine & Sport inside Glory Gains Gym in North Scottsdale.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Honestly, it has been incredibly interesting to start my own business. I am super grateful for the years I spent in the last clinic learning how the business is ran, how insurance works, scheduling etc. And I am lucky to have many friends who have gone down this road of small business owners specifically in Chiropractic. There isn’t a day that goes by I don’t speak or text my friends from school about business ideas, small minute details I didn’t know about in regards to the back office work I should stay on top of. Without my friends, it would be a lot more challenging. Also, I have the world’s best girlfriend who keeps me motivated to be the best version of myself and express that through my business.
Without her, I don’t know where I would be today. I look at it the same way I looked at being hired in Sacramento… Once I have someone lay on my table, I am confident that my assessment, treatment, and personality is a gigantic difference maker and they will know I am 100% invested in making them feel better, move better, and perform better. Before my biggest struggle was having enough time with people to do the things I thought was necessary to render a result, whereas now, I have the time, I make my appointments for that necessary time to give the best treatment I can.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We like to say that we are ‘the modern approach’ to chiropractic care. By taking a detailed history and assessment we take the guessing game out of the equation. We will blend multiple therapies into one in order to optimize results for our patients. Some of the common therapies we do will include chiropractic manipulation, myofascial release therapy, instrument assisted soft tissue (commonly known as “Graston”), rehab therapy, performance care, and mobility programming and most importantly education. We pride ourselves on being able to confidently empower our patients with the tools necessary to get them to recover from whatever is ailing them at that time and how to prevent the future incidence of injury. We are very outcomes-based when it comes to therapy and I’ve always said that once someone lays on my table, I know they will not just feel the difference, they will specifically see the difference.
Common Conditions/areas we treat: Sports Injuries, Whiplash, Neck, Thoracic, Lumbar, Hips, Wrist, Elbow, Shoulder, Foot, Knee, Ankle problems, Plantar Fasciitis, Sciatica, Disc Pain, Nerve Pain, Headaches, Migraines, Rotator Cuff/Labrum Pathology, Impingement disorders, sprains/strains.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to my second year of owning my business. In Sacramento I would teach movement, mobility, and technique classes almost one to two times a month, sometimes three to four, and now that I continue to meet more and more gym owners that are becoming a demand again. That excites me because I am very passionate about teaching people how to take care of their bodies and how to protect them. I want everyone to have fun and enjoy their lives with the freedom of movement and having their body perform the tasks they want it to do, pain-free. This past year my good friends I mentioned earlier flew out to Scottsdale to help put on a two-day seminar teaching people that information. We will definitely be doing that again next year except we anticipate it to be much bigger than the last one.
I also started a Podcast recently that has been an awesome passion project of mine to further educate the masses in regards to health, fitness, life and information to know in regards to when might be the right time to seek care. Today’s day-in-age, it is hard for people to know what is right from wrong on the internet and we look to change that process by educating our clients and others that listen in to the “Coop-Encounters” podcast. Our community is growing, and we look forward to seeing the continuous expansion.
