Today we’d like to introduce you to Abbi Jackson.
Hi Abbi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
The moment that made me realize the importance of video was through my Aunt. She was paralyzed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair. She came over to my two-story house one time and was unable to see the upstairs. So my brother and I took a video camera and filmed the upstairs so she could see. When we showed her, she was so ecstatic and grateful that she could still be involved.
That’s the moment that made me realize what film could do- it can get you to experience something you wouldn’t have otherwise. I started filming my adventures with a GoPro, especially my underwater adventures (because many people won’t ever get to experience that) and eventually picked up a DSLR and started to get hired for events, weddings, concerts, and music videos. I filed for my LLC in 2020 and the rest is history.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The self-employed/entrepreneur route takes a lot of discipline. You’re always on. There are times I have definitely thought of succumbing to the 9-5. Even now, there are months I will get so much work, and months I barely get any and there are times I forget about the dream completely.
But ultimately, the struggles are between me and me. Currently, on my whiteboard next to me is the framework for self-discipline, as well as the wallpaper on my phone saying “does it support the dream?” I guess I just have to remind myself how badly I want it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a media company- Grapefruit Media. We specialize in videography and photography. This includes events, weddings, music videos, commercials, real estate, and a large umbrella. That’s one of my favorite things about my job is that I get to capture such a wide variety.
My work sets me apart from others because I am able to hone in on a feeling and emotions through video. I can’t always do this with corporate clients, but if someone were to hire me as their wedding videographer and my video didn’t make the couple cry, I did something wrong haha.
Another thing that sets me apart is my underwater work. I am a Scuba Dive Master so I also do underwater videos and photos. Stay tuned for my short film which will have an underwater scene!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
