Meet Aaron Meyers of Aaron Films in East Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Meyers.

Aaron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Around age five, I started playing drums and became obsessed with music. That’s when my creative side really started to show. All I did for years was play drums and I really felt that I was destined to be a professional musician or work in the music industry in some capacity. After a while, I started to use my dads’ video camera to film myself playing drums. I would watch them back to critique myself but also I thought it was really cool to watch myself on TV! Eventually, I started using the camera to film all kinds of stuff. At one point, I was even using my toys to recreate and film scenes from my favorite movies, usually Star Wars. During my junior and senior years of high school, I took some college classes as part of a vocational program offered by a local community college. I was taking a class called visual communications which primarily focused on graphic design. A small part of the class, however, was on digital video editing and I loved it! Those were my favorite projects and assignments to work on. Like many people, I had more than one interest and as I got older, I found myself moving closer to my other passion, cars.

The moment I got my driver’s license, I was hooked on cars. I started modifying them and hanging out in the local car community. I ended up pursuing a career in the automotive industry cause at the time it seemed like the smarter choice than video, but I always felt like something was missing. It wasn’t till many years later that I picked up the camera again. By this time, I had built a nice career for myself in the automotive sector, but I had also built a pretty cool project car that saw a lot of attention on social media. I decided to start a YouTube channel documenting my journey with modifying and racing the car, it got pretty popular pretty quickly. I started to film and create more cinematic looking car videos that people really seemed to enjoy. I then started to film and document my friend’s car projects highlighting their love and passion for what they do and something just seemed to click. I realized that for me the video stuff had nothing to do with the cars, it was about the people. From there, I started filming weddings which can be nerve-racking but nonetheless I really enjoy helping people document their special day.

Over the past couple of years, it has snowballed into multiple wedding films, corporate videos, promotional videos for businesses, real estate videos, and a few personal passion projects. I’m currently working on two fairly large scale personal productions one of which is going to be a full-length documentary about the passionate and talented people that work in and are enthusiasts of specialty coffee. A few years ago, my wife was diagnosed with MS and it really made me think about what’s important in life and what makes your life meaningful. I feel like I’ve finally figured out that documentary filmmaking is what I’m most passionate about, it’s what I want to make my life’s work.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overall, my journey building a business based around video and filmmaking has been good, but no journey is complete without its up and downs. For me, the struggles are more internal, I’m a pretty bad perfectionist which can be a good and bad thing. It’s good in the sense that I care greatly about the final product I deliver whether it’s personal or more importantly for a client. The bad part is that I never think my work is good enough which I’m sure most creatives can relate to. I think where it benefits me is that it pushes me to never settle and to always be learning and growing. I try to put a positive twist on those bad feelings and say to myself “What can I learn from this and do differently next time?”

Aaron Films – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My tag line is “Passion For Story.” The visual and audio quality of my projects are very important, but it means nothing without a good story to back it. I think what makes me different is the passion I have for the story and meaning behind the project. It has to have meaning to create an emotion or feeling. I’m extremely detail oriented down to the music and the tiniest of sound effects, it all aids in telling the story. If the story isn’t there, it’s literally meaningless.

Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
I feel that the reason I’ve started to see some success is that I’m a genuine person. I put my heart and soul into every project I work on no matter what it is. It’s a reflection of who I am and the type of people I choose to surround myself with. I don’t do this for fame or fortune, to me it’s about creating meaningful relationships and documenting what’s most important to people and myself.
