Meet Aaron Fortin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Fortin.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My journey into photography happened by pure curiosity and luck. A wise man once said, “luck happens to those who are well prepared.” Whether I was prepared for photography or not is still a mystery to me. I was attending junior college in San Marcos, CA, in my third year with no real interest or ambition. I decided to start exploring different electives and came across digital photography. The first week of that class I now had a Nikon D90 and kit lens with no idea what I was doing. I used that camera body for three years, learning it inside and out. I’m a big believer in knowing your cameras capabilities and incapabilities. It WILL make you a better photographer.

Please tell us about your art.
My art revolves around dramatic and epic landscapes the world has hidden in its cracks. Ive spent thousands of hours in my car venturing to Navajo Reservation (with consent), National Parks and hundreds of National Monuments. I want to photograph landscapes with history and document them the most beautiful way I know how. My work is very straight forward, but I do enjoy the post-processing aspect of photography. I will send day editing a single landscape image, creating effects that I think add to the feel of that scene.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national, or international events and issues affect your art?
The role of an artist has become a bit of a grey area in today’s media-shift. Travel and vlogging have become a bit of an art category on its own. It’s not for everybody, but it’s being widely respected and appreciated. For me, international events can greatly influence my art. I’ve been to Europe a handful of times, and each trip I capture the essence of this world that I forgot was capable of existing. And vice-versa. The American Southwest is a hubbub for international traveling. People from around the globe come to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon or Saguaro Cactus because landscapes like that only exist in the place in the world. It’s incredible that I’m able to document these occurrences and talk about them!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
